I Need Sponsors

I just signed up for the 42km KL International Marathon that’s gonna happen in two weeks time.

I hate forms that ask for redundant information. What’s the point?

The only reason I did it was because Eddie issued me a challenge, promising that he’ll bank in USD50 for me if I managed to complete the whole 42 kays.
Now you know I am not one to back down from a challenge, because MY NAME IS KENNY SIA AND I HAVE TESTICLES THE SIZE OF COCONUTS DAMMIT! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hesitated at first because I know endurance is not my forte. Strength-wise I’m fine, I just don’t have the stamina for a full-fledged marathon race.
Actually I DO have stamina, just not on my feet. Somewhere higher.
Regardless, I’m obviously not in it to win it – I just wanted to see if I have the perseverance to run the full 42 km.

There is one problem though: I’ve calculated my expenses to KL, and all-in-all I have to pay about RM700 for travel and accomodation. That is NOT good for someone who’s been living with an expanding credit card debt for the past few months.
I’m looking for corporate sponsors to finance my trip to KL. As a once-off offer only, I’m selling 1-month image advertisement space on kennysia.com for just RM300 (that’s SGD130, or USD80). Just submitted my application form and booked my AirAsia flight to KL on the 4th March. The competition is happening 5am on the 5th March and I’m probably gonna pass out from exhaustion in the hotel room immediately after the marathon [Sorry Lainey, no more La Bodega this time]. Hmmm… do you think AirAsia flights have room for stretchers?
Speaking of which, having the competition start at 5am is damn ridiculous. Bloody hell, 5am is NOT the time to run ok, it’s the time I go to SLEEP.
Heck, they ought to have a competition JUST to see if I can wake up before 5am.

Come to think of it, me taking up the marathon challenge is a really bad idea.
It’s bad because:
1. I’ve never participated in a marathon race ever before.
2. The only training I had was walking around KLCC for 3 hours carrying Nicole’s shopping bags.
3. All the other contestants look like this.

But heck, I’ve signed up already.
I just hope I can still feel my legs after the race.


The following fact can make stomachs churn, so if you have no balls you might wanna stop reading right now.
Fact: Everytime after I recover from a heavy workout or an all-out run in the park, I notice that my shit doesn’t come out in it’s usual brownish glory. Instead it’s red, like blood. I’d like to think that it’s because fats in my body are burning, but the truth could be more worrying. ๐Ÿ™

    I wondered if you have spoken to people who ran marathon. My friend trains 3 times a week for months and find it hard to complete the marathon.
    I am not doubting your mental tenacity. Just don’t overstrain yourself.

    second left, i applaud your signing up for a marathon!! i emceed for Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon last december and just by being there, i can feel the hard work, the determination, the pump, the muscle pain, the stagnant air filled with body sweat and wet grass.
    third down, get in shape. U’ll need the training and the will power. Sometimes it’s not all always mind over matter. Set your goal to achieve (full 42km) but also know when you have to say NO and let your body rest.
    fourth right, i go find you in KL and you can carry my shopping bags after your run!

As you acclaimed that 2ft upper is your strength, might be better to try intercourse marathon like the singporean girl (104), guess guiness book record gives more than 50 bucks

  16. I had a very, very fit friend who did 42km, finished, couldn’t feel his legs after that and went on MC for 2 days due to dehydration.

  17. Kenny, hope u are really thinking twice of going running. Even if u try to walk all 42 km is not an easy task. For a start maybe u can try walk to work for next week onwards and see ‘tahan’ or not. Otherwise what is USD50 is u have to spend like USD 50 times xxx for your medical fee later on. And u may have to pay higher premium for your health insurance. He he he. I would say USD 5000 then maybe u should consider. Heck, the sponsor money u ask for is more than USD 50 la.

  20. Hey Dude, itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs depressing to see discouraging comments, ignore them, without proper exercise and healthy diet, you wonรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt be looking that Kawaii anymore in 10 years time.
    For my first marathon, I trained for 2 month and my longest run prior to a race was only 8 miles, you should be able to fished, althouh it will be brutle. I rested for one day and went to work, my last run , I was working the next day.
    Some running tips for your last two weeks of prep.
    Use gravity. You donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt need to push yourself forward. Do a รฅลฝลธรฅล“ยฐรจยทโ€˜รฆยญยฅ , with your back straight, lean forward. What happen? Yes, you are moving effortless.
    Do no hold a fist, instead hold a loose รขโ‚ฌล“OKรขโ‚ฌย sign at waist level, your heart will not be working extra hard with less restriction.
    Do not lift your feet/swing your arm/ twist your torso more than you needed. Smooth sliding forward motion.
    To reduce strain on your ankles, run in the middle of street as all streets are built angled on the sides for drainage purposes. At every turn, cut into the corner like F1 racing, you save some distance. They do add up in a 26.2 mile run.
    Wear blister free socks, cool max hat, shirt, runnerรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs short ( yes, go commando) and lightweight sunglasses.
    Since youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขll be swinging your arms at least 84,000 times, make sure you put generous amount of Vaseline or leftover KY jelly at your armpit and crotch area. Shave them armpit/pubic hair if you donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt feel too gay. Trust me, friction will turn those big coconuts red and sore.
    Will power: Human are designed to run about 12 miles, after mile13, itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs all mental, you may hallucinate, you will have to do some imagination to get you through. Talking to yourself, is good. I always imagine an engine/train/18 wheeler going down the highway. The trained mental power may one day help you overcome illness, back stabbing friends, cheating wife …, youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขll never know.
    Drink a lot of water the day before, quality carbs, make sure you have a few gel pack before race day to avoid Lau sai when you run. Do not miss water station, away drink a cup or two, cool yourself with water.
    Every 1.6 km, remind your selfรขโ‚ฌย relax, posture, vroom ,vrooom, vroomรขโ‚ฌย

  21. Hello? – this is your ‘Unker FH2o’ who has TWICE d stamina u had, remember? (do i need 2 hit ur head w d paddle again?) I HAD ran many marathons b4 and d bad news is that KL’s the TOUGHEST!! Even at my present fitness level, I wouldn’t be able to do it! I would seriously need to train for 3 solid months to be ready! To finish, u’ll probably have to walk most of d distance taking u at least 6hrs or more to complete. Keep Moving – Never Stop. Drink plenty fluids along d way; Do NOT miss any water stops.   33. About your shit issue… do you think it could simply be a confounding variable due to the stuff you habitually eat after a workout? Maybe you like to eat a particular type of food or drink. Or maybe you eat more. Protein in general tends to make life harder for shitters. Is there blood when you clean your shit? Are your working out regularly? Try workin out mor often and see. Good luck! Crap in general varies from ochre to greenish to black. Reddish is a first, for me at least.

    Just do your best man, you know your own capabilities and whether you can do it or not – hey, what’s the worse that can happen, you get too tired and don’t complete the marathon or walk your way to the end – I think you’re smart enough to decide for yourself whether you can finish the marathon, or whether you’re going to push yourself to death or something.
    All these comments are probably well-meaning, so not to put them down. But I think it’s admirable you’re trying to do something difficult, that’s the main thing, best of luck!

    Approx 20x longer? I’m sure you can make it… perhaps modifying your “Coconut Balls” into a form of wheeling transport can help?

    …but in all seriousness, unless you have been training distance running regularly for some time, it is not wise to go the whole distance straight away. I have done a 21 km race before and frankly, I seriously doubt if I could push it all the way to a full marathon given what I know about myself. It’s partly psychological, but then that’s just me.
    You CAN go ahead, but pls do pay close attention to your own body. It will speak to you, first in whispers, and gradually in a flat out scream. 5 hrs. after you start (and yes, chances are pretty high that you will still be on the road by then), it will be 10 plus and very hot. Chances are also pretty high that you may have a blister or two in a pair of wet shoes. And chances are you will probably be walking very slowly (if not limping) at this stage. So, uh, you go, go all the way lah, but go informed weh!
    We are so gonna be entertained.

    Regarding ur stool….if its brght red …tat means the problem is at the lower part of ur colon…might be piles …eat more fiber will do….if its internal bleeding, it should be in black…coz by the time the stool reach the rectum…the bright red is gone…..I think its because of the sport supplements u took b4 ur workout…..better consult a doctor though..
    As for marathon, u SHOULD start to train now……and rememebr not to buy a new pair of shoe…..use the usual trainer ……..u have to eat more complex carb for a few weeks prior to the marathon and train during this period……..and two days b4 the marathon…just rest and eat the same amount of complex carb……..this way u will get “explode” on the marathon day….and dont forget to hydrate urself too!

    Seriously, i have to applaud you for even thinking that.
    its much too short a time for you to even prepare for a half marathon, and we are talking about exponential figures here, not proportional ones.
    Still, if your aim is just to complete it by walking, i think you will do just fine.
    there’s no way you are going to finish it running non-stop, that much i am sure.
    All i can advise you is that you better buy more of the powergel (url: http://www.powerbar.com/Products/PowerGel/ )from GNC, say around 2-3, and consume them say around the 17km, 25km and 33km mark. Also the chocolate ones taste real great.
    Just remember to conserve some energy for the final burst of 200m cos thats where all the crowd will be anyway. though my estimate is that you will finish around 6-7 hours, meaning around 12 noon.
    Oh, drink lots of water in the days leading up, cos it will be the only thing that will help you.

  52. This is no laughing matter. You can still complete 42 km if you have determination, but you’ll definitely fall sick. Our body is not conditioned to run such a long distance if we don’t train before hand.

  59. Meh don’t listen to the detractors. 42k is doable in a couple of hours as long as you keep hydrated and don’t give in when you hit ‘the wall’. Just think of Bak Kut Teh 5 yards in front of you and chase that Bak Kut Teh the entire race.

    This is an eighteen years old guy, a brand new engine so to speak and hardly being abused except for the few trips to the pub, it is as good as being in training for 18 years.

  66. I think its a bad idea if you are not an experienced runner. When i say experienced, i mean at least getting used to a 10-15km run. You are going to feel really horrible and frequently feel like quiting the race even though its for the sake of completing it.

  69. Take it easy and walk all the way if you have to. Just imagine a brisk 6 hr plus walk from one end of Singapore to the other end and back. During the race, find a pacer whose speed you are comfortable with and you’ll find yourself staying mentally focused. I can assure you, this will not be your last marathon as you will be hooked to running at organised races after this. Sign up for the Saberkas run too. It’s fun. Good luck.

  74. I’m not sure if you’re aware of the sheer magnitude of the task. Without proper training, you likely won’t be able to finish even by walking leisurely from start to end. Even if somehow you do, the damage to your legs etc would be extremely severe.
    Those people cheering you on aren’t helping you. You shouldn’t be running it at all.

  75. Bro, 10 simple tips from a guy (without prior training, same build, same situation) who did his first S’pore SC marathon few months back. You can finish if you’re willing to make sacrifices to your personal comfort.
    1. Start long slow jogs of about 30 mins today. But don’t overdo it with speed or hills and injure yourself before even starting. Slow and long.
    2. Start waking up before 5am daily to do light jogs, to accustom your body to the early hrs, and to help with point 3. It’ll be a torure on day 1 but it gets better thereafter, trust me.
    3. Clear your bowels before the run. Many marathoners are forced to give up when they have to go out of the way to find a loo. There will be mobile toilets (I hope) but there’ll most probably be a (long)queue too.
    4. Eat something along the way in addition to isotonic drinks. Your body stores can last about 90mins. If you don’t replenish, you’ll get muscle cramps. Body fat cannot convert fast enough to fuel you during the event, but food can (power gel, energy bars).
    5. Eat lots of carbo type foods, esp. pasta starting today to fuel your training, esp. 2-3 days before the event to build up your glycogen levels (carbo-loading).
    6. Don’t do any exercise 1 day before the event or you won’t have any reserves to finish.
    7. You might want to wear sunnies or a cap on that day. Nothing worse than sun glare when you’re struggling at the final stages.
    8. Bring along an MP3 player. The music definitely helps to mask the pain, drown out your voices of doubt, and motivate you. I’d have failed without music.
    9. Drink at evey drink station.
    10. MOST IMPT: If you aim to complete, walk, don’t run or jog. I walked from start to finish and crossed the line just over 8hrs…but I did complete, although barely. Good luck!

    11. Don’t feel discouraged if ppl pass you. You’re there to complete, not win. I only passed ONE person the entire course… felt very lousy during the entire course…but I completed. Many didn’t ๐Ÿ™‚
    12. Prepare for the pain after the event…it’ll pass gradually…after about a month (no joke). Excuse enough to go for a nice massage ๐Ÿ˜‰

Just stop when you feel you really can’t go on anymore. Simple as that. Even if you don’t finish, what do you lose? The bet, but you will feel damn good about yourself that you gave a shot at something very few people dare to even try. Give up now and these same people call you a wimp. You choose.

    I was about yr build at around 24 yr old. I started running seriously when I was about 17 yrs old after watching the early Marathon runners. Usually I would go running in the late evening when it’s cooler for about 5 to 10 km every day. Initially it was hard on the stomach,with excrutiating pain and agony, but after you have overcome it mentally, you’ll feel a “second wind” coming through after passing the 1st 3-5 km marks. This would help me get over the huddle till the 10 km mark. That is when, my feet started to get heavy and leaden down…. usually it’s my legs and feet that gave up after the 10 km mark. I took part in a couple of 10 km race,,,but was not fast enough to win…just some reasonable placing (within the top 5 to 10 position). A few others were always better than me.. but I was happy anyway, bcos…I was running to gauge my running ability and endurance. In the end I never ever take part in any marathon or even half a marathon, as I had a moderately heavy body (heavy bones structure), similar to yr build, which was no suitable for marathon…more mass (weight) to carry around.
    (At 24 yrs old my weight then was about 65KG, HT=170cm).
    One trick that got me going was to just think about getting over the next km..(and celebrate that mentally when I passed it..and set another small goal to pass another 1 km ahead).
    U need to keep you body cool down…beside drinking copiously …when u are running..seriously…u also need to also keep dousing down yr body with the water …sponge or pour water over yr body…
    So starting at 5 am is a good time….help yr body to get adjusted slowly..to the heat…building up in yr body..
    Dont overdo what yr body cannot take…a friend of mine did a triathlon event…swim, cycling and running…in Spore a few yrs ago.
    He had taken part in a few such events before, but this time around he did not have time to get into “condition”. At the end of the race, he collapsed and was warded in Singapore Hosp.
    His situation was quite bad, as the doctor thot that he nearly had a kidney failure.
    Cost of Hosp Bill = S$6500 for about 4-5 days stay (2 day in ICU).
    Why…bcos he push himself physically…mentally very strong…overcame all the signals sent out by his body…but physically ..he wasnt prepared or conditinoned for the heavy running…
    Anyhow…good luck and hope you complete it…
    Remember…u are running for yrself first…not for someone else…

    my friend trained only a week prior to the singapore marathon last year. and he managed to run for about 10km, brisk walk another 10, stroll the 3rd quarter and drag his ass the last 12.195km. He did it in almost 9hrs.
    AND he came back to work the next day. So don’t worry too much! Good luck and I’ll see you there at the finishing line (if you don’t take too long)…
