Goodbye 2008

Goodbye 2008. You suck.

As much as I am appreciative of all the wonderful experiences, rare opportunities and fantastic people I’ve met this year, I cannot help but to feel that at times life has been throwing me dilemmas after dilemmas as if to test my patience.
I hadn’t been in such a low state of mind since my father’s passing. That one hit me hard. This one comes pretty close.
I don’t wanna come across as “emo”, because the last thing I want from others is sympathy.

Depression hit me pretty hard several times throughout this year. It is difficult to stay upbeat amidst the demands, the expectations, the threats, the slander, the misconception, the accusations and the general lack of trust I perceived from other people and from myself.
Was I selfish? Or did I care too much for the wrong people? I don’t know. Seems like such an incredibly thin line separating the two.
So many times I felt totally hopeless when it comes to decisions I made with my career, my friends, my relationship. So many times I felt I was put into situations where it’s die die both ways.
Guess this must be what they call the quarter-life crisis.

At least I am doing well on the money side of things.
Despite losing a lot when the financial crisis hit, I saved enough throughout the year to finally be able to build a decent investment portfolio for myself. This is in stark contrast to two years ago when I had the bad habit of spending almost every cent of my salary. I have also learnt a lot about how to run a business, and with those skills I hope to start something of my own in the coming year.

For my new year’s resolution, I wanna:
1. Start a new business.
2. Run a marathon in less than 6 hours.
3. Double my investment portfolio.
4. Get less addicted to e-mails and Facebook.
5. Be happier.

Before the final few hours of 2008 melts away, I just have to say:
To all my true friends who stood by me especially when I needed you the most – thank you.
To all my business associates and acquaintances – for the precious opportunity to work with you, I thank you.
To all my readers whom I’d never met, yet came up to me to say hi, to shake my hand or asked to take photos – I am most humbled and appreciative.
To all the people in my life whose feelings I may have hurt, whose expectations I may not have lived up to, whose promises I may have broken – I am truly very sorry.
To all my haters, fuck you.

Happy new year, people. Hope your 2008 was less crappier than mine.

First time poster, but long time reader.
Wish I can meet you sometime, shake your hand, even take a picture with you 😉
Its good that you can reflect on the year that’s passed, but hope you have a great 2009!

  2. Happy New Year 2009! May this coming new year bring u more peace, love & happiness! I didn’t have a good 2008 year either but hey, life goes on. So be strong Kenny. Whatever happens.. u must know that u DO have a lot of supporters out there. Take care! =)

  3. mine sucked too.
but your blog made stuff better on days when i needed a laugh, and on days where i needed to escape to someplace else through your travels.
however, i am not thankful for those days where i look at your fantastic food while i’m in a ravenous mood.
thanks kenny. and to a better 2009!

  4. HAPPY NEW YEAR KENNY! It’s the true friends that matter most. Have an open-mind and accept things that have happened but make the future better! Let whatever has happened be and build a new future for yourself and find renewed happiness! Happiness is, I think eventual, we just need to find it ourselves.
    Have a Happy 2009! 🙂

  5. Hello there. You most definitely won’t remember me, but I’d just like to say that I love reading your posts, and it shows in them that you are a nice guy.
Have a wonderful new year. You deserve every bit of it.

  6. Hi Kenny,
2008 is not a good year for me. My investment portfolio reduce in value for about 40% to 45%. I am now saving more money to rescue my portfolio. It is hard.
I hope I can do something to rescue my investment in year 2009.
Happy new year Kenny. Wish you all the best and be happy always. 🙂

  7. Oh my… Don’t fuck me eh Kenny… Ahaha… I hope you wont hate me. You never reply me de. But never mind. My 2009 wish = Meet Kenny Sia in person! xD

it is a brand new year and wish you have a brand new start…It ain’t easy to forget the past but it makes you stronger. Do what you should and not making yourself regret with what you decided.
May your resolution comes true. Never ever meet you but surprisingly was seeing someone pretty much like you in One utama. A guy delivering OGAWA…LOL
It is pretty hilarious when my friend told me the statement: “that guy looks so like Kenny Sia”
I was like: ” yea yea…I think the same thing too^^”
Have a nice day^^ it is 2009 so live it up!!

  9. Happy new year kenny, 1 of my resolution for 2009 is to meet u personally and take a photo with u 🙂
Good luck and hav a great year ahead

  10. 2008 was crappy for me too. I hope the new year will be a better one for you! Happy new year, Kenny! Hope to bump into you in Sg some day. Will definitely say hi and get a photo! =)

  11. Happy New Year 2009 Kenny… not only was 2008 crappy for me… it was always crappy all the way back to 2005!!! I’m going through a rough patch now too, almost the same time as you (end Nov 2008)… depression is my close buddy now and all that I want for 2009 is very simple – to be happy.. so simple yet so difficult to achieve…

  12. happy new year man =) running a marathon below 6 hours is something that you can do easily =x. i haven’t tried a full length marathon so i don’t know haha.

  13. Good luck on your resolutions! And who in the world could hate you???!! Kenny is loved by all and sundry! Especially, the sundry at 😀

  14. Heyya, year 2008 for me was a roller coaster ride.. i enjoyed every moment of it, except when there were some very low hits!
Here’s wishing you a blessed new year!!

  15. Kenny,
Don’t take the haters so seriously. They will always be there, and unforntunately are part of the internet, but like a drunken soccer fan, meaningless. I have always enjoyed your blog. If you ever get to the U.S. and would like to learn how to fly fish, semd me an email. I live on a cold water river in Oregon.
    Happy New Year …

  16. Happy New Year, Kenny!!!
I usually wish others a fantabulous new year
but mine hardly end up that way.
2008 sucked as much as 2007 for me.
Let’s hope that 2009 will be truly fantabulous!

  17. aww thats so sweet. i didnt get a picture with u, though i got ur autograph & is still with me. xD oh n yea actually i did hv a photo with u & my friend in ur blog from the Segi junior journalist workshop… bwahaha. anyway, ur blog has always been an inspiration to me, as well as made my day much lighter with the humour in your posts. yet, your posts on a more serious note, has even more fascinated me and inspired me in so many ways. And no, I don’t think personal reflections as such make you an emo. It just makes you more human who actually thinks of his life and knows what he wants.
    Happy New Year 2009!!! =)

  18. OI Kenny!
Happy new yaer! and happy Chinese New Year! At least show me some response la 😀 take care 😀 may you are blessed with more blessings like the cow’s energy hahaha!

  19. Kenny, I think it’s perfectly fine to be “emo” from time to time; human beings, including men, deserve an outlet when we are hit with sadness, frustrations, or depressions. Striking a balance in between being emotional and getting a grip is important.
Happy New Year 2009! Ou bonne année!

  20. Wishing you a blessed and fruitful 2009. Cheers!!
31 Dec 2008 was my last day at my workplace and i love my job so much though but had to decide to start my another chapter. Im also going to start my own business in this coming Feb too!
    All da best anyway~

  21. There were 88 comments before this so I apologize that I break the “prosperity”. This is a very encouraging post, and brings much hope for your readers towards you and their own lives. Thank you for staying motivated with your life which motivates us all.
    Have a BLAST in 2009! 🙂

  22. Happy new year Kenny. 2008 was a bad year for me too if that’s any consolation. But I finally got a real epiphany this morning when I woke up from a drunken stupor so things are really starting to look up.
I hope 2009 will be a better year for you and all your readers.

  23. Hey kenny,
Failures and disappointments come and go in your life. You know what they say: a person who has never failed, never did anything.
I suggest ‘the winning attitude’ by John C Maxwell. It really puts things in perspective and i assure you, you’ll feel much better!

  24. Happy New Year Kenny 🙂 well, everything went well for me until 31/12/08 – lost my purse to a snatch thief!!! Spent my last few hours in police station instead of count-down with friends in Gurney. Heck, what a way to end 2008. Right now, I have zero identity (no IC), lack in cash & no license to drive. I guess this is what people mean by start afresh…Hope we all get a better year this time 🙂

  25. Hey Kenny,
Do welcome and embrace year 2009 with an open heart and cheerful mind, and trust me, it will be a better year than 2008. Just wanted to let you know that your blog cheers up many people in many ways and a big thank you to you! Hope that in the new 2009, there will be more opportunities open up for you Kenny and your resolutions stay firm that your new business in 2009 will have a great kickstart and all your dreams will come true! Wish you well, =D

  38. Been following ur blogs for months and I just wanna wish u HAPPY NEW YEAR :D!
Good things will come ur way :).

  39. Haha… I love the last one. “To all my haters, fuck you.”
Happy New Year to you too, Kenny! Though I only met you once (and saw you jogging on the street – almost wanted to give you a honk of encouragement, if there’s such a thing) you come across as a quiet guy and… at the same time, I feel that you are cautious as well. Like you don’t know who to trust. Well, that thought saddens me a little. The world is such a mad and nasty place.
Well, I hope you find happiness too. So am I, incidentally. 🙂 Wish you all the best. Cheers!

  40. Seriously man, for someone like you who has gone through and experienced so many things in 2008 alone that most of us can never have in our lifetime doesn’t make it suck. How many of us in our 20’s can have a business and an investment portfolio and can afford to go to Europe. Maybe you can or some of your friends can but not many of us. We even have problems keeping our jobs, let alone a savings. If your life is considered “suck” I am not sure what we should call ours?

  41. I guess u r like wat i was feeling. We lost our beloved pap three years ago. huh.. it’s felt even more terrible when directly & indirectly if that person meant alot to you.
But, I guess we’ve gone to the next level of life when such phenomena happens. So, keep on moving forward, strive for a betterness in your future, as well as improvement in yourself.
    Cheers, happy new year Kenny.

  42. Hey Kenny,
2008 sucked for me as well,
but reading your entries do perk me up!
you’ve kept me company on a long and lonely 2008~ although it was not all bad, but i would happily say bye to 2008 and Cheers to Us , Lets hope 2009 will be a better year!
Oh ya, I hope to be one of the random ppl that approach you for a photo taking session!
🙂 , If i ever see you in singapore or KL I shall!

  43. Hey ya Kenny! I actually met you right after the New Year started in Senso! It was really great seeing in person and my offer still stands. A pint of Guiness for the guy who lit up my gloomy days in England when the next round comes!
Take care now buddy. I’d just like you to remember that you’ve made a lot of ppl happier just by your writing alone. And i’m very certain that we’ll be more more than willing to return the favour if you’re ever feeling down.
    You’re a hero.

  44. Oi! LTRFTP.
