Sarawak Elections 2006 Fallout

It is very difficult for me to write this entry objectively without offending people.

Cutest. Election billboard. Ever.
While other bloggers can openly state whichever party they are supporting, with kennysia.com’s massive readership and me having friends on both sides of the fence, I regret I am not able to do the same. As much as I’d love to bare it all out no-holds-barred style, I understand that politics, like race and religion, is a very sensitive topic.
Revealing who I voted for would be quickest way for me to make enemies.
With that in mind, I ask that you read this entry with an open-mind, and understand that it is important that I voice out my opinion in my domain, but it is not my desire to offend anybody or rub salts into the wound. It’s just a blog. Nothing personal.

We’re just coming off from an exciting landmark election in Sarawak.
You see it in newspapers all over Malaysia today. The Sarawak Legislative Assembly since its inception has always been heavily dominated by the ruling Barisan Nasional. The Opposition often holding a weak 2, no more than 3 seats.
Yesterday’s historical election results was a shocker to many. I didn’t believe it when I was walking out from the gym at Hilton, and the taxi drivers were yelling in Chinese “Huo Jian Fei Wan Ah!” (Rockets flew today!)

BN swept most of the rural seats, but a total of NINE seats were lost to the Opposition. In urban Kuching, the Chinese-majority constituencies of Batu Lintang, Pending, Kota Sentosa, and Padungan all fell into the hands of DAP and Keadilan.
One theory I heard was that Kuching-nites were getting increasingly fed up with the Chief Minister, and were upset when SUPP repeatedly failed to voice out their concerns against the state’s head. The message Kuching-nites is sending to their (former) elected representatives in State Assembly is clear: “You didn’t work for us, so we didn’t vote for you.”

One, I like her hair, and two, Violet’s mom makes good ‘loh bak’

Most impressive victory must go to DAP’s Violet Yong, a 29-year-old law graduate from Melbourne University, who managed to defeat 63-year-old BN’s seasoned veteran and Assistant Minister Datuk Sim Kheng Hui by a whooping 4,400 votes in her first ever electoral debut.
Instead of giving Datuk Sim a mandate, the voters has denied Violet Yong a man to date. Because once she gets busy with politics, where got time to find man date right?

Another upset victory is Keadilan making their first win in Kuching. Who would’ve thought popular and well-liked Lily Yong could’ve lost to a Keadilan lawyer with a funny moustache?
Why, just a few days ago Lily Yong even held a massive concert in the rugby field over there. Musical concerts as part of an election campaign? Hell yeah.

I was a little disappointed BN’s Chan Seng Khai didn’t retain Batu Lintang. He’s a pleasant guy and I always thought he did a great job as Kuching’s mayor. Then again, stranger things have happened. Like Chris Daughtry getting voted out from American Idol.
The biggest losers this election aren’t any of the candidates, but the newspapers in Sarawak. I’m talking about the Eastern Times and Borneo Post. Hey if I had to turn to a national newspaper like The Star for not-so-biased election coverage, that’s not saying you’re bad. That’s saying you’re utterly hopeless as a newspaper because you’ve failed in your very basic duty to inform and educate the public.

It’s one thing to carry the furry balls of your owners, it’s another thing to uphold the confidence of your readers. If you anyhowly print big bold headlines humiliating Anwar and calling the Opposition ‘traitors’ without having any sorts of facts to back it up, you’re just gonna make yourself look stupid. No one is going to believe your bullshit. You’re insulting our intelligence.
Congratulations to all winners, and especially to Taib Mahmud, our would-be Chief Minister for 30 glorious years. Happy 70th birthday.

Sorry about the birthday present.

More Sarawak Elections:

Don’t you hate it when you were only jokingly taking a playful jab at someone, and then some people would be so anal they thought you’re actually for real *gasp*, that you were hating their friend and they become so offended they dedicated an entire blog entry calling you a whore? Poor penguin.

  1. yeah, it was a shocker when i saw the headlines this morning… who woulda tot the great BN would fall?

  2. A wake up call for the BN but nothing to be happy about. Sarawak politics is under the thumb of the West M’sia Political parties, poor political culture and no ideas how to lead the Malays out of the “Tidak apa” attitude and cannot stop the mixing of religion and politics. I have never seen politician reading “Doa” in Sarawak before but now it was imported in and consider “important”. Unless the local political parties like PBB, PRS, SUPP and SNAP getting their act together without having to come under the BN control but on condition of adopting greater political priciple and ideology (Singapore have DAP, Thailand have TRT)…I am sorry for the Sarawak forest, our oil field and our children.

  3. hopefully this spells the beginning of change in sarawak’s political landscape.. the state coffers are empty.. some families have their hands in everything in the state.. we need new blood & new generation of leaders .. gone are the days where politicians can take things for granted with empty promises and disregard of their constituencies-let this be a lesson that politicians are elected by the ppl for the ppl.. lose sight of that and lose the support of the ppl.. bottom line

  4. Let this result be a reminder to the BN here in peninsular that not heeding the people’s call is not good…oil price rising, police brutality, corruption, islamisation, racism…..

  5. The rocket party’s logo look a lot like PAP in terms of shape and color scheme. Thought the PAP is not satisfied with the 82 seats it got and decide to go contest somewhere else! hahaha~!

  6. Taib era is coming to an end. Sarawakians have enough of his bullshit and oppression. The only thing that progresses in the state is his CMS.
The SUPP billboard featuring the 3 gayish looking candidates was a big mistake. It probably scared the living hell out of BN supporters!

  7. its time for everyone to wake up. there’s a lot of bumi’s like the malays are together with the opposition..dap/keadilan..my dad is a malay, but all of our family had agreed, its time to turn bn down, they take the land for their own sake, they create racial issues, they eat people’s money. i personnaly wish Pujut DAP candidate as he was raising DAP flag..and no,we would noy forget KEADILAN Anwar ibrahim case, a total potrayal of how dirty BN are..

  8. Good! The Sarawakians is awake from the deep sleep… Padan Muka!!!
I’m in KL, if not, i will be voting for DAP too in Miri!!!

  9. DAP a 3rd class party? Heh,ex-Sarawakian don insult d intelligence of tens of thousands of sarawakians who voted for DAP.Don make stupid statement if u don know the facts.Such ignorant fool!

  10. The kuchingnites are telling Najis Razak “We are changing our lifestyle, so we vote for DAP and PKR!”

  11. DAP 3rd class party????EX-sarawakian u better go and look for the tallest building and jump down u stupid human,u just wait BN take all your land than baru u wake up…….

  12. pkr… that was weird. I always thought lily yong was a great one, she always spoke up, and was not afraid of speaking her mind. sad loss.
but Chan Seng Kai, well. he did a great job as mayor, but probably not enough. sad. ah well. lets see if DAP can hold on to their promises

  13. I wonder why Padungan ppl is willing to let Keadilan to step into our land…Will that be any different to vote the former DAP’s member who join the Keadilan for self-advantages??? If you know how the GANGSTER-LIKE keadilan supporters hanging around on the street in Kuching here(as what i met last nite)…i am sure that you will vote BN for padungan at least they are still look like Political Party…

  14. yeah!! violet’s mum makes good chinese new year cookies esp her short bread…hmm now that her daughter win, i wonder if she’ll give free for promotional tactic

  15. It’s high-time the old politicians step down. Only the Chinese can comprehend reasons for them to be on top for so long, and see minimal contributions from them; PERSONAL BENEFIT. I hear Chan Seng Khai has a huge mansion in New Zealand..
It doesn’t have to be true, IF he doesn’t keep fooling us with his conceptual plans he promises right before elections, that we NEVER get to see..well that I NEVER get to see. Almost 2 decades, CHAN SENG KHAI WHERE IS THE MASTER DRAINAGE in SG MAONG U BLOODY PROMISED US????? WE ARE NO FOOLS AND I AM SO TIRED OF ALL THIS CHEATERY..

  16. Like someone said, we don’t hell know who the DAPs are..Violet whatever.. I’m sure many are skeptical how these young faces can lead us. But we’ll vote for any party but BN.
Just like the KEADILAN win, Padungan will ALWAYS be for the opposition..even if an orang utan contested for the spot against SUPP.
WAKE UP BN! When we vote for the opposition SIMPLY BECAUSE WE THINK ANYONE BUT YOU DESERVE THE VOTES, something’s gravely wrong.

  17. Good post, your post expressed a personal but non biased view, solely based on the facts that happened. Nice work and effort by DAP, hope Kuching will be a better state economically, politically and socially in the future. Last thing, good job too on revealing the craps written by Eastern times.

  18. We are no longer living on top of trees (remembering Kenny’s head pictured with an orang utan updating his blog on a tree?)
Like most of you here, Sarawakians nowadays are highly educated people who need energetic and knowledgable leaders to represent them. The people do not want some old Mercedes engines. Right?

  19. DAP, DAP. Most of DAP candidates ARE lawyers. They can say anything they like to make you vote for them. They’re really good in sweet talking. duhh. It shows how easily ppl fall for their crappy stories. If they say they can lower the oil prices, then golah show us. Its a world crisis. Go lower the oil prices around the globe.

  20. About oil prices, Sarawak is a crude oil exporting state, definitely can influence on local petrol subsidy. Do you know that Sarawakians pay 2 sen/litre less than those in West Malaysia?

  21. Erm yeah, thts even before DAP came in. Hahh. And you seriously think DAP can stop the oil prices from going any higher?

  22. We cannot control crude oil prices, cos it’s a global matter.
But I am asking if DAP can push for more petrol subsidy, so that Sarawakians bear minimal cost even when it comes to oil prices increase.

  23. BN political culture is “With power will lead to personal wealth”. DAP political culture is “Making noise but not alternative policy maker”.

  24. i believe DAP deserve a chance. and i believe there should be 2 major party balancing the power.
because no matter how, the trouble still gets back to the Rakyat. So, lets get into politics!!

  25. Open challange to all BN chief:
If Malaysia can achieve Wawasan 2020 I will drop my pants in Medeka Square on 01.01.2020 9am

  26. “DAP, DAP. Most of DAP candidates ARE lawyers. They can say anything they like to make you vote for them. They’re really good in sweet talking. duhh. It shows how easily ppl fall for their crappy stories. If they say they can lower the oil prices, then golah show us. Its a world crisis. Go lower the oil prices around the globe.”
it’s not that simple, not all about oil price, c’mon. think big please..

  27. “…the voters has denied Violet Yong a man to date. Because once she gets busy with politics, where got time to find man date right?”
Kenny, in case you don’t know, Violet already has a bf, ok? She is my friend and also my ex-classmate. Yah… I do agree with you that she will have lesser time to go dating with her bf once she gets busy with her work as our newly-elected YB. Anyway, I’m glad that she won the seat. I’m truly impressed with her ability and feel proud for her!

  28. The BN thinks they can do whatever they like and blind the electors with mindless ‘development projects’ which only benefit their cronies and increase their bank account. The sister of Taib once run a condomenium project in Bintulu and ran away with at least half a million ringgits the unfinished is still there by the sea for everybody to see. I think we should not let him squander our money as if he owns Sarawak. It is about time he and his family show the Sarawakians some respect and not keep stealing our money!

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia’s biggest state, Sarawak on Borneo island, went to the polls on Saturday, with voters trekking through jungle and steering long-boats over rapids in a test of strength for the nation’s ruling coalition.
Sarawak, home to 27 ethnic groups including tribes once feared as head-hunters, has been ruled since joining the Malaysian federation in 1963 by forces welded to the ruling coalition and led by one of Asia’s longest-serving politicians.
Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, who turns 70 on Sunday, has led the state for 25 years and been in state cabinet for 43 years. Now, though, he has been diagnosed with early-stage colon cancer and is facing growing complaints of cronyism.
Opposition parties sense a chance to make headway in Sarawak and to regain some credibility lost in the last national election in 2004, when they received a drubbing at the hands of a new prime minister with a reform agenda, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“If the opposition wins an extra one or two seats I think it will reflect some concerns about who will lead Sarawak in the coming years,” political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda said. Abdul Taib’s government holds all but one seat in Sarawak.
Currently, only one state is not run by the Barisan Nasional coalition — Kelantan, in peninsular Malaysia — but Abdullah’s 2-1/2-year-old government has lost some of its reformist shine and made some unpopular decisions to cut state subsidies.
Among the parties trying to loosen Barisan Nasional’s grip on Sarawak are the main national opposition parties: Islamist group PAS, the Democratic Action Party and Parti Keadilan.
But Sarawak often focuses on parochial issues, such as tribal land rights, and the three parties have so far failed to form a cohesive alliance despite attempts by former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim, whose wife heads Keadilan, to talk up a common agenda.
Anwar, viewed as potentially the most effective opposition leader, is banned from holding political office until 2008.
“The problem for the opposition is that there is not one person who people can rally around,” Abdul Razak said.
Results of the election are expected late on Saturday night.

  30. Taib actually has a colostomy meaning that he does not have to go to toilet any more his faeces just pass into a bag hanging by his side. Poor man is this GOD punishment for his greediness?

  31. I dont support or hate either DAP or SUPP, they all have their own reasons, the man that should fall is the white hair undead who SHOULD die LONG LONG ago, he’s the one behind all the corruption

  32. It’s too bad about Mirians’ mindset. Just because George Chan has focused a lot of the development on our city we think “oh hey, this isn’t so bad”.
Chan is a pawn and he doesn’t even know it. He apologized to Taib when he should have been apologizing to the people for their lose of confidence. He feels sorry for losing SUPP seats but does not know why the people have voting against him!
Do not be blinded by this “Miri Resort City” theme. Why should our natural resources benefit West Malaysia? More importantly, why are we still so behind when we contribute so much? Why should we let BN do whatever they want? Has SUPP ACTED upon our concerns within BN?
Think outside the box my fellow Mirians. Think BIG and ask yourself whether your voice is heard in Government. Don’t leave it till they have used our land for their own purposes. Show them we are not followers of 31st August independence. Let them know 13 September marks the rise of an equal, not a follower.

  33. DAP!!
Sarawak have their own source of oil. Malaysia have their own source of oil. On what grounds do we obliged to pay more every 2-3 years?

  34. Dear Nutcracker,
The DAP is indeed an offshoot of the PAP of Singapore.
40 years ago, when Singapore decided to leave Malaysia, the PAP members in Malaysia formed the Democratic Action Party.
That’s why the struggle of the PAP and the DAP are almost the same.
In the 1960’s Lee Kuan Yew, your first PM while he was an MP once said this in the Dewan Rakyat (Parliament) in Kuala Lumpur:
They (the Malay extremists) have triggered off something basic and fundamental. Malaysia – to whom does it belong? To Malaysians. But who are Malaysians? I hope I am, Mr Speaker, Sir. But sometimes, sitting in this chamber, I doubt whether I am allowed to be a Malaysian. This is the doubt that hangs over many minds, and the next contest, if this goes on, will be on very different lines.
Once emotions are set in motion, and men pitted against men along these unspoken lines, you will have the kind of warfare that will split the nation from top to bottom and undo Malaysia. Everybody knows it. I don’t have to say it. It is the unspoken word!

He was speaking up against racial and divide and rule politics that is still alive in Malaysia.
So dear Singaporean friends, count yourself lucky that you have a clean government that don’t play race. Don’t say that “wah Singapore cannot bribe cop, how I wish the cops here are not so strict”.
Meanwhile the DAP is still struggling to fight for a Malaysian Malaysia that was once championed by the PAP.
As intelligent and educated readers, I think we should raise awareness amongst our friends, especially our Malay brothers and sisters who believe that the DAP is a Chinese extremist party. That is false. (a few years ago, Lim Guan Eng, Kit Siang’s son, was jailed after he failed in protecting in court an underaged Malay girl who was allegedly raped by the Malacca Chief Minister)
Although how the PAP has also become so action and authoritarian after these years is another issue la.
    – West Malaysia Gal

  35. The winds of change are sweeping Sarawak. The popular BN candidates lost out because of their colleagues who failed to deliver. Sad but BN has to ensure the delivery of the whole team. Let’s see what happens in the next election.

  36. Our white Croc had a colostomy?
A colostomy surgery is the removal of part of the colon or lower part of the rectum and the sphincter, which controls the passage of stool through the anus. The bowel is brought to the surface of the abdomen through an opening in the skin (stoma). Waste products (stool) are then diverted through the opening, or stoma, and collected in a bag taped to the skin. The location of the stoma will depend on the part of the colon that was involved in the surgery but the surgeon will generally try to place the colostomy above or below your belt or waistline and away from scars or abdominal wall creases that might cause colostomy bag leakage. The consistency of discharge from a colostomy will also vary, depending upon what part of the bowel is used to make the colostomy and other patient factors.
No wounder they brought in a Bomoh to do the DOA after the result was announced.

  37. the petrol for our cars are imported lar… our good oil are exported to other countries. Its the subsidy thing done by the governmentthat causes the petrol price to increase. DAP DAP DAP! Yap Chin Loi chiak pa bo su cho… of course lose lar

  38. In the past, my parents would vote “not to loose” instead of “to win”. This time round, the young, bright and well-informed generation voted to win and what a stunning difference that turned out.
We had all been afraid and afraid for a long time. We were afraid that we might get run over by the tidal wave of imported Malayan politics with nothing but the intention of complete domination and discrimination. My parents voted SUPP for as long as I can remember simply because they were afraid, sensing how vulnerable we were, and still is today, and of losing the only voice we have in the system knowing full well they were ineffective in the unequal partnership. The fear was completely misguided which only further invites encroachment into our right; the racist new economic plan, the racist 10% donation towards house purchased as legislated law, PBB just added 5 more constituencies to the already formidable stranglehold in power and the list goes on.
This is only the start towards reversing the tide.
Congratulation to all those who voted and those who just won their seats and bear in mind that we haven’t won yet, and that there is still a long road ahead of us. The urban population certainly has started the ball rolling, and let’s bring that momentum to the rural population in 5 years.
Put away your champagne for now as there is much opportunity and work to do and here is why:
    ………Popular Vote….Seats in the Assembly
    PBB…………29%………..50%
    SUPP………..21%………..11%
    Alt-parties….15%………..12%
(Alternate parties – DAP, SNAP, PKR, IND, PAS)
It’s obvious that majority of Sarawakians (79%) have been screwed, which presents itself much of the opportunity.

  39. I went to perform my ‘duty’ as a voter in a School near where I live. I have more or less set my mind on who I wanted to vote for but behold… when I reached the voting station, register myself… What I saw really surprised me! I always thought that I will be voting for the candidate for the Padawan Constituency, but I was given the voting paper to vote for the Batu Lintang Constituency! I don’t even stay there!!! Made me hesitate on whether to vote or not there and then. But, I did, hesitantly.

  40. Well Done City folks of Sarawak. You have done us proud. Kuching is certainly going to be one of the places I hope to reside after my retirement.
Every cause has a reason behind, as the saying goes ` you reap what you sow’. The victory for that Keadilan Lawyer is not an unexpected one also, he has been there working quietly without much publicity for the past 10 yrs or more. In comparing with the BN opponent who only talks outside the DUN & well supported by the BN influenced Media, the Padungan voters made the right choice.

  41. Yep, Violet’s mom makes good lobak, And her hair looks great (in fact, her posters look great). I’ve seen her before during her younger days as I too studied in Melbourne, since we’re both the same age. And Dominique does look a little like a con man, to be honest…
On a more serioue note, can someone tell BN losing a mere 9 seats is no big deal. What the hell do they expect? a 100% clean sweep with only one party in the legislative assembly? sounds very much like a dictatorship or draconian-authoritarian system to me.
as for the losers (i pity those who lost their deposits), they can’t complain much. some are really nice people but if you can’t do your job and are too chicken shit to stand up to your big bosses, then you don’t get any mandate from the people.
as far as i’m concerned, kudos to DAP.

  42. HELEN, you are so right. Mirians seem so illusioned by the “Miri Resort City” theme that they think that SUPP has given them a great thing. Think, people. There’s nothing “resortish” yet that’s really been completed around here. The Marina is still years before completion. They rushed too declare Miri a city last year just to be in time for this year’s election. What much difference was it before it was a city? A petroleum museum? Pah. It was barely completed come city day but the CM already officiate its opening. Usually it’ll take a few months for something to be in operation and then would some big guy come to officially open it.
And don’t get me start talking about the Baram bridge. It is the bloody most expensive bridge in Malaysia and yet it is nowhere long. The Penang Bridge costs about RM7 to cross and that is like, what, 13 km? And this stupid bridge costs RM 10. 2 and fro, RM20. And they say it’ll last for 30 years! What, the state government is so bankrupt they couldnt finance this bridge that they need the people to pay some more? Dude, that is sad. If any of you Mirians remember, the bridge was initially proposed as a suspension bridge a la the golden gate bridge in San Francisco. Well what happened? I guessed it has already served as a vote-fisher years back that they forgot about it.
And hell, am I the only one who notices things are goddarn expensive here? The NST is suppose to cost RM 1.80 in East Malaysia and yet clever bloodsucking people are selling it for RM 1.90. What’s the 10 cents for? KLUE magazine, which costs RM5 is sold at RM 7.50 here. Whoa. I thought since Miri was dubbed “the oil town” oil would be cheaper here. Eh, nope it isn’t. Maybe that’s why they changed it to “Miri Resort City”. Instead of Miri Oil City.
As a net EXPORTER of oil and gas it is a surprise that our country is raising oil prices. Shouldnt it be oil IMPORTING countries who raise prices? And when that is so, shouldnt we be benefiting from it?
So much to be said. But I think why Miri is the only Urban seat that did not fall to the opposition is due to lack of credibility of opposition candidates. The DAP candidate in Pujut almost made it, giving BN a slim majority of 1000++. We need candidates in the mold of Lim Kit Siang, Anwar Ibrahim, & Violet Yong! Bold speakers who does not fear the wrath of bloodsucking capitalists around the state. Come on Mirians! As long as we give BN our votes, they will always live happily and grow old and fat in their Luak Bay Mansions.

  43. ArcticMonkey, seems like the Mirians have forgotten about the big white elephant port project? 🙁

  44. ya, long live the rocket !!! one day, rocket will rule malaysia! wooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!!! i am few mths to 21, if i can vote sure oso DAP! one day oil will cost no $ in sarawak! hehehehehe! BN sux!

  45. ah yeah, the big white elephant port as well. costs millions of taxpayers ringgit and could only ship sampans because the baram river mouth is actually very shallow. few feet deep only. tuwaw tuwaw tuwaw.

  46. DAP is the best party Malaysia has from the whole bunch. Multiracial, multireligious, inclusive, dedicated MPs, courageous leaders (see how many of them were willing to sip tea in prisons for their beliefs), and a party which consistantly raise and pursue the things that matter, such as corruption, abuse of power, censorship, and discrimination.
What else could you ask for from a party? Which other party has these commendable characteristics as well?
BN = UMNO + MCA + MIC + Other component parties (sorry lah, too many to list here)
Those three main component parties are all mono-race based, excludes other races for their memberships (tantamount to race discrimination then, don’t you think?), and belief in an ancient (and frankly insulting) ideology of ‘Ketuanan Melayu’, ‘Chinese Nationalism’ (asyik ‘sekolah cina’, ‘sekolah cina’ only) and… okok, no Indian equivalent lah.
Like that, where got any ‘Bangsa Malaysia’ in them? Hypocritical for BN to constantly utter the concept of ‘Bangsa Malaysia’ to the people if they themselves are incapable of opening their memberships to all races. Pirrahh!
PAS = only Islam. So much for inclusiveness. Plus I subscribe to the concept of separation of church/mosque/temple and state.
Keadilan has more potential. Looks like a little brother of DAP, with a Malay twist. I like. But weak leadership is resulting in it’s stunted growth at the moment.
There, those are my personal views and reasons on why I support DAP 🙂 I hope I didn’t offend anyone in this comment of mine, and if I did, it wasn’t intentional, and my discussion was just confined purely to Malaysia’s political scene.
And Kenny, I disagree with you on your reluctance in revealing or discussing your political preference. I feel that Malaysia has to grow up on this matter now. Which brand of politics one subscribes to shouldn’t be a taboo. Its no different from which ice-cream flavour one likes. If someone doesn’t like it, no.1: its none of their business anyway, and no.2: they should just grow up.
But come one lah, don’t jia jia dude 😛 Judging from your pictures, it would seem that you share my taste in politics as well lah, right? 😉

  47. hell yeah!!!!!
    go dap!!
and i agree when u sed politics too sensitive.
if you talk too much, you might be in jail for causing unrest. so good choice.
good blog about the balance issue man!

  48. I am a bit of a PRS sympathizer myself…
    … but good on DAP.
The BN government desperately needs a slap in the face and the voters certainly did that. In a way, I think this is a grassroots backlash for all the crap that BN federal politicians have been dishing over the last couple of years.
People are as stupid anymore. Even in the rural areas, majorities have been reduced across the board.
If this doesn’t make the government take notice, I don’t know what will..
    Once again, congratulations DAP.

  49. I purposely flew from KL to Kuching on Saturday morning just to cast my “Vote of Objection”. I didn’t even join or heard any DAP campaign. Good feeling was that I shook hand with Dominique Ng (PKR-Padungan) before performing the citizen duty.

  50. People are asking what good is 6 DAP members in the State Assembly? I think we must all be reminded that change doesn’t happen overnight. Let there be GRADUAL change. And to prove that we the people of Sarawak are serious we must stick to what we believe in and deliver more VOICES into the government until we see CHANGE, no matter how long it takes.

  51. ‘DAP, DAP.
    Posted by: M at 21 May 2006 11:36 PM’
It is true that DAP is full of lawyers. But why don’t you ask yourself why that is so. Why are these lawyers fighting against the government?
Truth be told a lot of ‘lay people’ in Malaysia do not understand a single thing about democracy although they have been voting for such a long time. Ideas of Civil rights/liberties, the Rule of Law, Separation of Powers etc, fundamental principles of democratic nations world wide are put aside in favour of BN’s own twisted idea of democracy. A true pro-democracy party would never so blatantly reveal that they want all the seats in an election. Democracy is all about ‘the majority having it’s way but the minority having it’s say’. When a party such as BN announce their intention to take all the seats, they are basically asking you to vote in a tyrant.
The democratic safeguards of our nation are either non-existent or too weak to control the government (executive). Holding such an overwhelming majority in Parliament basically means that BN can make ANY law, and change the constitution (yes, the very thing protecting YOUr freedom) into any shape or form. As such, even the judiciary is a subordinate of BN. Your freedom today is fairy tale. Clearly BN is better at sweet talking since they have swindled away your liberty.
    From Wikipedia :
    ‘Amendments
To amend the Constitution, a 2/3rds majority agreeing to the amendment is required in both houses of Parliament. According to constitutional scholar Shad Saleem Faruqi, the Constitution has been amended 42 times over the 48 years since independence as of 2005. However, as several amendments were made each time, he estimates the true number of individual amendments is around 650. When asked if “the spirit of the original document has been diluted”, he replied that “there is no doubt about it.” ‘ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_of_Malaysia)
PS: And yes I am studying law but this is no ‘crappy story’

  52. I don’t understand why Malaysian still practice racially-based politics 50 years after independence. Remember Tunku used to say the British colonial power ruled each race differently and that is why the Malay were left behind economically? Well seemed that after 50 years of ‘equal’ treatment of all the people, the Malays are still left behind economically except for a very few who know the right people. Maybe it is time to change our racially-based systems since it had fail us for the last 100 years!

  53. Some Kuching people are so STUPID. Just because some people wanted to vent their anger and frustration at the government, they voted for the opposition. Now so what? BN is still BN. The government is still the government. But you know what has changed?? The CHINESE people no longer have major representatives in BN! Reps in the government decreased! So.. stupid CHINESE ASSES who voted for the opposition, you will rue the day you stupidly voted for the ROCKET. They may be members of the parliament, but do you think they have actual voices to actually change things for the people?? NO. They will still be the underdogs yapping annoyingly outside the gate, the government will not take their words seriously. In the long run, we all suffer, no development and no opportunities, as government will not invest into areas under the opposition party!! 5 years is a long time. You just wait and see.

  54. disappointed,
Well, if I have a chance, would really want to yam cha with u and explain piece by piece the reason for each opposition action. A friendly chat..to be precise.
I am an avid BN supporter, but will always vote an opposition. I do suppose based on what you type, I can assume you are still young. Thats because if u r a ‘grown up’ middle age but probably had gone through procedures in civil life. Eg, if you buy a house (w/o 7% discount), and you found out that it has defects and complaint to the developer but he dont care. Report to the authorities but they close an eye. Seek costly legal recourse when you can barely afford. Send letters to your YB when the most u get is they will look into it. What will you do then?
Its not that we do not like development, but the fact that the current government controls all out taxes makes them capable of developing. But where no one helps you, when u r desperate, what would u do? The voices is parliament today are no longer the peoples’ voices. Your candidates in election are choosen FOR u before hand and u MUST endorse them to get development. That is a clear threat.
Well, I wouldnt want to go into detail, because I am confident you will soon realise life in reality. You are bound to feel it..
I did say previously that I am a BN supporter. Well, SUPP to be precise. George Chan was quite a capable person. He have changed. He is being controlled. He knows it, but it puts him in a hard position for political-status and he shares the same grandson as Taib.
Well, I have one humble opinion. If SUPP were to voluntarily pull out from the State BN before the next state election. The CHinese would gain the most. Why? Because by then, we chinese would have no representative in the government. It is a GOOD news because by then, as ALL chinese are opposition, we can exert CONSIDERABLE outside influence because we form the second largest racial group in Sarawak. PBB would never want a situation where CHinese are not represented, as racial tension can run high and PBB arent going to risk a racial clash to then ignore our views. If they do ignore us, without a representative for us. It would be tantamount to an invitation to civil war. Its a lose-lose to both them and us and they are not stupid to risk it.
The point now is, whether SUPP can ignore self-gain for community gain. They will certainly be opposition to those who wants to rise the hierachy. But this is the only way, a matter of last resort to put the Chinese back on track. Where SUPP put away differences with DAP…whollaa.. u cam compare it with how the Malays join forces against Malayan Union last time. They risk themselves to victory. Nonetheless, if we r successful, I do hope we can really help out our REAL bumi friends. I had tons when young.. But very few nw. Most crumbled during primary sch..they cant even afford revision books..
However, if SUPP were to do so, it has to be a secret, and it has to do it before the election. Any actions after an election will just brand them a hypocrite. It is time…
If remedial actions are not taken.. civil clash is inevitable, regardless of what politicians tell u.. IT is inevitable… May not be anytime soon.. But it will be inevitable..and my prediction will be certainly be within the the end of this or the next generation.

  55. Dissapointed,
As far as I know, when a seat is governed under an opposition party, the government will work their asses up to gain back the seat by pushing up more and more development. Ain’t that a good thing? They won’t be complacent anymore and tidak goyang kaki. Look at the rural areas. They have been voting for BN for too many years and they still remain being ‘rural’. Expect your 5 years under DAP to have the government growing bald making up plans to appease the citizens. BN will not take the people for granted from now on and will not be stepping on the people’s heads. Yeap, I still believe its a good thing.

  56. Well, politics are very complicated. With one party alliance, no matter BN or the Opposition holding a vast majority, the other side will not have anything to say. What i mean is that when an alliance has a vast majority, let’s say 85% of the seats in the parliament, it means that the ruling party can rule with an iron fist, correct me if i’m wrong. So if there a government like that, the government can do whatever it likes. 🙂 and if this happens, what is democracy?
By have a much more even seating, let’s say 60:40 to the ruling party, we can see more development, less hoo hahs by the MPsss. The task of an MP is to protect the benefits of the people, and also for the betterment of the country. Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what can you do for your country. Not to offend anyone here but the mentality of Malaysians till today can be still considered childish, or in a softer phrase, immature.
Have you look at how the MP’s talk and debate in the parliament? I might not qualify to be any politcian nor do i hold Ph.D in Political Science or Law, but wat i know is that debates in there are sometimes way childish. You should see the debate once.
And by the way, let’s not take sides to who wins or lose in any of the election. Have you ever saw how does the party election machine moves? Where does all the funding comes from? Why are they mining on small and trivial yet at the same time explosive matters? THINK….
Think yourself as a Malaysian, not a MALAY, CHINESE, INDIAN, IBAN, KADAZAN, MURUT, OR ANYTHING. MALAYSIANS ARE MALAYSIANS. If you all wish to have a rerun of May the 13th now, go on with all the racial remarks. As what Kenny has said, POLITICS, RACIAL AND RELIGION topics are fucking SENSITIVE. It is safe to talk racial crap in Japan for there are only Japanese, no others. But please don’t fan the flames of racial differences here in Malaysia.
Remember, you are born a Malaysian, you have no choice but to accept this GOD DAMN FACT. It doesn’t matter if ur a Malay, Chinese, Indian, Bumi, non-Bumi or wateva, so long as u hold a MALAYSIAN IDENTIFICATION CARD (I/C), UR A MALAYSIAN.

  57. Dear Readership of KennySia,
Yes, we should not raise racial sensitive issue and should not even think of it. I boarded my flight yesterday sitting beside an old Malay couples, they are so so nice, sincere and humble.
Regarding those who think that there won’t be any more development in opposition controlled urban areas for the next 5 years, then you are too naive. If the government dare to try not to develop or fix the drainage, I guess the MBKS building will be stripped down by people to its original shape.
I am sure here we are (if not all) smart citizens, think logically, the state issues which had epidermically felt among us. Some said betting is the root cause of SUPP failure, OMG, please rethink with their heads put on. There is no proof, otherwise we shall see people get caught by police for being poll-fixing.
As the polling result came to a reality, what we are looking forward is what these new breed of leaders can do for us. Make use of them, to voice our opinions out loud in State Assembly. We love development, and in fact we want more development, in a progressive and positive manner. Not wasting 300 millions to construct a building which has nothing to do with us?!

  58. dissapointed,go and study the truth before u say anything.let’s talk about that piece of land at stutong now develope to shop lot do you know who is the bigger share????answer,SUPP members u dare to say some people are stupid.May be u are dump and blind.what so bad about DAP????SUPP when go to metting they just bring bottle and coconut

  59. I flew hom from KL specially to cast my vote but ofcourse a bit disappointed when the candidate that I voted didn’t get to win, I can’t blame her as she is running against a Datuk who won every election he has contested. Anyway his margin has depreciated to 500+ this time, he should feel ashame for the margin previously was 5000+. I think a lot of people like myself are not satisfy with politician because they get their hand into business and making themselve wealthy is the ultimate goal for entering politics. I mean we are voting you to take care of us voters and not to use us as a prawn to make yourself wealthy. In 5 years time I hope the voters will vote all this politican out of office if they contine to deliver into their own pocket.

  60. DL, thanks I didn’t know that. 😛 I was just trying to play on the word ‘mandate’ lah.
nutcracker, as those before me has explained, the DAP in Malaysia is indeed an offshoot of PAP in Singapore. Hence the similarities in the logo.
Dr. N, gayish candidates? Now that’s a bit harsh.

  61. to ex-sarawakian
soli for da oil field yes but dun soli for sarawak children and forest….first thing sarawak forest have been privatize and no longer under federal goverment control…second da largest importer for education affair in da country(da most kiasu foreign country SENDeR ) is sarawak…so dun ever sorry for dat….tat all

  62. Kuching politics: Vote for the right individual and not the PARTY, leadership by example is important. Unfortunately some who do not deserve to win, won. Its unpredictable…
Secondly, I hope we see a change in Kuching soon, it’s important to help the people but it is MORE important to educate the Kuching people. We are spoilt in Kuching and we need to change for the better soon.

  63. “Some Kuching people are so STUPID. Just because some people wanted to vent their anger and frustration at the government, they voted for the opposition. Now so what? BN is still BN. Posted by Wormie at May 23, 2006 07:38 AM
Wormie use your brain ok, every chinese that vote for the oppostion know there’s a low possibility oppostion will rule everything, and the BN will still be government, and maybe there will be no development to areas that voted for the opposition, but do you think just because of this threat we will go vote for BN? Me as a chinese, and other chinese that vote for oppostion, we wont buy in that and wont FUCKING eat that. I don’t give a shit & don’t give a damn man!!
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil (corruptor & vase) is that good men do nothing”

  64. Apologize for the comment above, a mistake, sorry wormie, its wasnt you im referring, its ‘disappointed’

  65. what?, thank you for the clarification. Don’t do it again. 😉
It is strange why we always think the opposition and the government cannot work together. Our argument always is that the opposition will create trouble for the government. Why can’t we and especially the government think that whether opposition or not, the ultimate goal should be for the country. Maybe I am naive, maybe I am too hopeful, maybe I am too idealistic or maybe our politicians are still immature and short-sighted!

  66. Good day, my fellow Sarawakians/M’sians~~ 😀
To some people, pls don’t be so resistant to Change. I’m no political scientist, but I think this Change can be a good thing. It also gives the opportunity for people to prove themselves.
Besides, what’s done is done. No point in whining. Not satisfied? Vote differently in 5 years’ time.
Also.. my other two cents.. Name-calling is *so* immature. Do grow up. ‘Nuff said.
    Cheers,
    Antonia

  67. It is safe to talk racial crap in Japan for there are only Japanese, no others.
Posted by: Kevin at 23 May 2006 5:15 PM
Sorry, off-topic, but I beg to differ on the above comment. Japan may appear to be a homogenuous country, but there are other races as well. And racial discrimination *do* exist.. the victims are mostly Japanese of Korean descent. If you’re interested on the issue, pls read an old journal entry of mine and also, more detailed analysis here.
    Cheers,
    Antonia

  68. the only thing to make the system works is to ELEMINATE ALL FUCKING RACISTS IN SARAWAK ITSELF. don’t complain a lot of other things when this single issue is not settled. fuck you racists, yes im referring to all fucking races in SARAWAK who are racists and that means anyone in case you dont understand.

  69. ahhh,
FUCK U… u must be that arse malay who gain at the expense of the ibans.. or u must be the adopted son of a timber tycoon or business cronies.

  70. I hearby challenge those UMNOs to tell Sarawak CHinese this:
“IF U DUN LIKE, KELUAR DARI MALAYSIA LA”
I just wish they said that… then we can start cut oil supply and let the sukhois come to bomb us..both rugi

  71. Whoa my dear friends, let’s not start bashing each other up. You, being this race and you being that race. You, son of tycoon and you son of a Datuk. You this you that. Screw this race and screw that race. Don’t contradict yourself by being the very thing that you swore against.

  72. East M’sia is probably the best place for things to start a change. For those s’wakians that study here in the west, you would probably realize the difference of the way we think from the west Malaysian. ahhh is probably a west m’sian who “can see the dirt in other’s eye, but can’t see the log in his own eye”(chinese saying, hope i got it correct..:P)
Anyway, I’m quite interested to see if there will be any improvement from now until the next election. 😀

  73. Last time I heard that RM50 and 2 sack of rice can buy 1 rural voter’s vote(by collecting IC in order to vote for them). Did the vote buying price increase?

  74. Sigh, what i know is that so long as Malaysia practices controlled democracy, so long will Malaysians act like this. But thinking in another sense, It is important for Malaysia to have controlled democracy for there are loads of Malaysians that don’t know a thing about the main objective of an election, even more don’t know a thing about politics and integrity, and majority of us are childish in our thinking. 🙂

Well, if the buying price increases, i’m starting to think whether i’ll pay my income tax or not, since i have to donate some of my money to buy other people’s heart to vote for something i’m against.

  75. I hearby challenge those UMNOs to tell Sarawak CHinese this:

  78. you know, all this personal bashing going on around here (i.e., “go to hell DISAPPOINTED” – Anonymous at May 24, 2006 05:49 PM) is really just a reflection of what goes on during parliament.
how can we ever progress politically if the attitudes of many resemble that of a pre-schooler?

  79. Hear hear Kenny! I back you up on the newspaper coverage part. Ever since I’m back in Kch, I never bought local newspaper anymore cause its all craps and bulls**t! I’m paying double the price for Star but nevertheless, it gives me satisfaction of knowing I’m reading how a proper newspaper should be. But now I’m reading Straits Times already :P, so I missed the whole election stuff

  80. Thanks for posting the commentary of the
    election results on your site.
Whatever you do, be it government jobs or
otherwise do your best for fellow human. Like

  81. I work in Singapore , a sarawakian. And I wonder why so many sarawakians are in Singapore for godness sake. working in bars, waitress, waiter, professional. you can say it. Why?
Like they said…. INI naik ITU naik, gaji tak naik.
Correct. salary, a main closure for everything. & I even heard KL authorities going to build Disney Land @ Johore Bahru and discussed with the Landlord in Japan & US. About yesterday, I saw the newspaper again saying the denial of discussion of moving Disney to Malaysia. & this singapore newspaper (TODAY), boasting that it would move to SIngapore after the big winning project at marina bay (Casino) which won the interest of genting international as well. bla… long story.. just forget about it…
I mean we sarawakians also have to voice out right? moving disneyland to borneo would be a good start to our live and economy instead of the west malaysia. sometimes i even think of seperating sarawak from malaysia… in which singapore is making a wise choice in 1963 / 1967 i forgot. Look @ singapore now…..
The world of lee kwan yew. rubbbish…
SMRT owned by his wife u know? his assets I could say uncountable (in billions USD)
If sarawak is to follow singapore’s footstep. I am very sure that foreign investors will be very very interested on our land and here comes the economy. Bringing up a better borneo. But all these are just “dreams” which might not be happening again unless we could turn back time and seperate sarawak from the west & sabah.
A very mad blogger with lots of anger inside.

  82. For he and she who volted for DAP…Well done. We need policing people like you to keep us informed

  83. hey very mad blogger,
i’m from KL, althought i kinda agree with you that borneo potentially doing much better if without penusular malaysia. but knowing someone who had that idea broke my heart. i love borneo and will NEVER NEVER want it to be apart from malaysia. i agree with most of the blogger here that we should vote for opposition parties just to give our “almighty” BN a big slap! to me i’m happy to see what has been done in sarawak and it’s not enough yet! i can’t wait for the next GE to come and we malaysia can give BN a BIGGER slap! to learn more about DAP pls visit http://blog.limkitsiang.com/?p=196 and read those article that are posted there ( i spent 3 hours doing it and i was so digusted by what BN has done to my beautiful bolehland that i nearly PUKE) to see how childish and how uncivilise our BN PM”S watch parliment’s clips here http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8370061686388546166&q=parlimen+malaysia i can’t believe malaysian vote for people that are soooo uncivilise to represent us.BN, a can of worms!

  84. I am very happy to find your Webpage and read yours and your readers’ comments on the recent state elections.I am one of the winners in the recent state elections, and I hope one day you will also share in the cause I have been fighting for some 20 over years. Yes I have crossed over to KeADILan from the DAP but no its not for my own personal gains. The DAP has done a very good job speaking up for the people and I hope to be able to work with it for the sake of the people.
This is the first time someone has told me that my moustache looks funny! I grew that when i came back from Australia, to signify a clean break from that stage, and my entry into adulthood.
Keep up the good work. Its refreshing having someone speak up the way you do. Yes the English newspapers in Sarawak have a long way to go, and they have much mud on their face this time.
I am working for the day that White Ant will step down and allow us to get back Sarawak, whats left of it, intact. Corruption is an evil that has to be eliminated. And we need young people like you to voice out fearlessly and without favour. Keep up the good work!

  85. I had a hard time controlling my feelings upon readin ET yesterday (7/8). It’s like those 3 idiot writers (Andy Chua, Siva Kumar G, Azam Zawawie)are paid to write for BN! C’mon la, SUPP ppl.. y b sore losers? Lose, lose la.. 5 yrs from now, work harder la.. ET oso one.. apple-polishing reali good for business ha?!
When DAP/Keadilan giv ceramah, accuse SUPP of dis and dat, wat SUPP ppl do? They held concerts!! Yet they claim wat the opposition did in DUN are stupid?! Who more stupid, ha?
DAP control, then no development ah? Dat how u brainwash ppl? Then how come Teresa Kok did so well over there? Yet, Alfred Yap went aroun town tellin ppl beware if they allow DAP to giv ceramah in their kopitiam.. it backfired, and ppl got angry.. go figure..

  86. We’re just a Colony. Colonised by Greed, hatred, ire and laziness. We are a host for an Evil that can’t speak it’s name. An Evil that was sent abroad on a scholarship, and on return, cut the WRONG WAY, to inflict the most horrible pain to everyone on this God given Sarawak Earth.
And yet, colonised as we are, we vote for this Evil each and everytime, threatened, without our consent, a worse ill will beset us all. An Evil like this seeking to perpetuate it’s falsehoods.
There is no word in any belief to describe this Evil. There is no dream left to hope in.
The Evil who speaks, the Evil who instigates, the Evil who kills, the Tyrant who ransoms our spirit.
When can we be free of this Evil ?

  87. yeah…separate Sarawak from malaysia is best option at least. Singapore has made a very wise move. If only could turn back time.

  88. Sarawak sekarang hanya sentiasa tunggu Pehin Sri Taib sahaja bercakap.Kalau dia ‘A’ memang ahli – ahli politik semua cakap ‘A’.Mungkin Taib cakap makan tai mereka pun makan tai.
sekarang gangster pun ramai …..harap Bukit Aman punya Polis selesaikan gangster.Hapuskan mereka seperti mana hapuskan komunis dahulu.

  89. The Dayak how come you think separating Sarawak from Malaysia is the Solution. U want to lets those Bumis eat chinese shit? Like Singapore what status of othes races?

  90. BN is worst when pak lah took over. Iam glad that oppostions won quite a lot of seats in west msia which makes them the 30 percent crowd in the dewan sitting. But please take note and be advised that those oppostions who won must remember this. DAP hopefully must win the favour and the hearts of all races and not only the chinese, eventhough the party was alleged as a chinese base party. PKR also must adapt to the same request. Malaysia are multi racials. Not DAP only for the chinese and PKR only for the malays. Other races must also be considered. The kedazan, iban, orang ulu(include kayan.kenyah, kelabit, penan, ukit, beketan, murut…a lot of us here laaa..) If we are not considered then let us go. Like the queen release Brunei and Hong Kong, Independent!! You have your oil trengganu, ours miri and bintulu. This is just a suggestion to lighten your burden. Perhaps the less states msia have the better the pak lah feels and also the rest of the cabinets. Macam mane, boleh tak?

  91. Hii..guys, dont be upset over suggestions to release sarawak and sabah. That is just a suggestion only. Normally when too many states to monitor this will cause pak lah and the cabinets severe headaches. Eventhough if being separated we are still good friends. I have my girlfriend from trengganu its not easy to forget laa.. Any way in time of need we will be with you in spirit. Our sarawak rangers during the 13thMAY conflicts despatched to your territory to help, and the situations was fixed. This involved a veteran sarawak man who later being awarded the 2nd highest british galantry award (THE GEORGE CROSS). 1983 in kluang johore operation gerakhas setia, a sarawak veteran fought the communist whom later being the receipient of the malaysia’s highest military award PENGLIMA GAGAH PERKASA (SP). Both of them was wounded, but one was worst being a single carburator engine. Satu kidney sudah liau.!! Satu..absorber sudah bocor..susah jalan. Those 2 living heroes almost died in action. You have your oil in trengganu, we have ours little in miri and bintulu. We love you all…we miss you..!! CAN ARRANGE LIKE THAT…BOSS? (this is a question to Pak Lah) This is to minimize your burden towkay, can laaaa…heheheh.
