Chang Yang, the situation for transvestites in Bangkok is that they do indeed openly agree to pose for photos topless with tourists. Like it or not, that has been the tradition there and will remain the case for a long time.
One thing you must keep in mind is that she is a man. She is a pre-operation transvestite with implants for breasts. She is not born a female who has cultural boundaries when it comes to exposing the mammaries. And if you think of it that way, what difference is there between a transvestite baring her breasts and male swimmer baring his breasts?
Why is one more offensive than the other when in both cases the subjects are males?
No where in my blog entry have I ridiculed or degraded the transvestite. On the contrary, I find her fascinating and that is why I took a photo with her. After all, the livelihood of these ladyboys depend a lot more on photo opportunities with tourists than it is on anything else. And that is a fact.
I sincerely hope I have explained myself clearly why I believe I did not cross the line when it comes to publishing the said photo. However, even if I did not manage to convince you, I still do hope that we can agree to disagree. Obviously we as individuals have different opinions and boundaries when it comes to matters such as these. Some things that I think is okay, perhaps you may think is not. It's not who is right or who is wrong, but rather the differences of opinion.
I hope that you could respect my opinion just as I have respected yours. I genuinely do not believe that the transvestite will be ridiculed as a result of this blog entry. Unless I see symptoms of that, I would like to stand by my decision. And I hope that eventhough my decision does not make you happy, that you could at least respect my decision.

When it comes to sexuality and nudity, I believe there are certain arbitrary boundaries in different scenarios, and among others, those boundaries are dependent on the culture and context in which the material is presented.
For culture, what seems okay for one culture might be a sin for another. Baring shoulder is the norm in Western culture, but in a conservative society the same outfit could be deemed indecent or even heretic. In Netherlands you could safely bare your breasts on a beach, but in a US street doing the same thing could still get you arrested.
Speaking of the context, pictures of various shapes of breasts are acceptable in a wikipedia article about breast; but the same thing wouldn't be suitable in, say, Power Ranger in Cartoon Network. A picture of a breast rummaged by breast cancer could, and should appear in a medical textbook; but if someone is to write a post taunting a girls' deformed breast using the same picture, I am sure that everyone would say that it's distasteful.
In my humble opinion, it would be ignorant to say, "Aiyarr, be open-minded lar, it's a breast picture nia marr, you little children cannot take it then close your eyes loh!" Such comments simplify opinions towards nudity into a false dichotomy of "open-minded vs. close-minded", and fail to consider the factor of culture and context. The world doesn't only consist of two mentalities where open-minded = all nudities are okay and close-minded = freak out at any signs of flesh.
When I wrote the first post, I was of the impression that Kenny has been poking fun at the sex-industry culture without respect whatsoever towards the dignity of the individuals who, by choice or by no choice, became a sexual / entertainment worker. To me, the post seemed to be bustling with testosterone excitement. Not that it's anything wrong to talk about exciting and sensual experience in a red-light district. But I must say that if there was already the slightest frown in me after reading the first 80% of the post, the final picture brought it home with its distastefulness.
Yes Kenny warned about the nudity in the very first line, but the picture still appeared quite distasteful. It seemed to be shed in the light of pure manly joy. As an analogy, I could very well write a dead-serious post about sexuality, begin with a warning that "hey there will be nudity in this post", then go on rambling about the issue, and then top it off with distasteful pornographic pictures done by two penniless girls who agreed to do it with reimbursement. Yes in Kenny's case it's not as bad as what I describe in this hypothetical example, but I am just illustrating what I mean by "still distasteful despite warning".
When Kenny replied to me, I was glad that he took his time to reply to my short comment personally. And after reading his context and views about the sexual industry, I felt that he's been sincere in that his defence that he has never meant any disparagement in his post. How the readers interpret the post are up to themselves, but as Kenny clearly stated his intention and gave a relatively acceptable context regarding the picture, I kind of accepted his reasoning and chose to respect his decision. Admittedly my flatteries might have been unnecessary.
Having said that, if I were him I wouldn't have put up the picture, and despite respecting his decisions, I do not endorse it.(I said " I understand and respect your action", not "I support you"). It would have been much better if he gave a good context in which he describes and places the picture. Or simply don't put the picture at all.
But oh well. Since it brings in tons of hits...

Its not that matter of fact whether u're aroused or not after seeing the photos. I personally think that there's nothing wrong showing a nude photo in ur own blog. But i kinda disagree at the way u and ur fellow blog readers judge a ladyboy.

honestly, when i was 8 years old, my auntie brought me on a holiday trip to Chiang Mai where I was treated to an ah-guah show. This is talking about Kenny's alleged lack of respect for the transvestite, and/or by extension, the transsexual community. Um, nothing to do with the lack of objection of said transvestite, as has been affirmed, she does not mind perhaps because she is desperate for the money, it is the norm over there etc.
Nevertheless, I believe the purpose of the post is to stir up a debate about matters worth debating. Should we say he has done it in a crude manner, for a mainly crude audience, who has proved itself crude with likewise crude comments?
One point of contention would be perhaps the insinuation that the last picture provides. Let's just take the last picture, put it in a new post without words. If I may quote,

The picture posted is not done in a manner which advertises the wondrous advancement of plastic surgery, or the lengths people will go to to find 'themselves' or putting it simply, a non-sexual way of saying, "Here, look see, this is this".
I don't know about you guys, but I see a smiling dude holding a tit.
Which is probably why all these detractors of Kenny feel so disgusted.
Maybe there is an altruistic reason for all of this, bringing to light the plight of a people forced to make a living off sexual acts with the body they feel they deserved but had to work for.
Personally, I think that Kenny was on holiday, he went someplace, some things are done there, and being there, he is documenting some things commonplace there. Like the post with the snake heart eating. Going to extremes is not reserved for bloggers, but bloggers have an avenue to share an experience and they do so, partly to receive feedback and stimulate interest/discussion. Ain't that it?

hey come on people. kennysia mentioned that he got the rights and permission to post this picture up so you guys just let it be. what's the point of shooting here and there? gain anything from it? some of the comments were saying that his/her face must be censored or blured and some say must censored his/her nippy. i dont see the need in that. kennysia posted the last picture without editing it is because he wanted to show you guys that he took a picture with a HIM wif boobies. if you censored this and that out, whats the point of posting the picture? think about it, if kennysia dont have this permission or what so ever, do you think he can even take this picture with him/her at the first place? maybe he can but not with his/her boobie sticking out with kennysia's hand on it! as a reader for so long, i think that kennysia's blog sometime do crosses the line but maybe this is him and you dont see this kind of blog elsewhere. you cant control him or edit his blog for him. so its either you stick with it or go read somewhere else! i just think that as a reader, we read and not wasting time thinking how to pull kennysia down in the comment room. if thats the case then you might as well open up a blog, registering it under 'ihatekennysia.blogspot.com'. enough said. you take care.

This post has been insightful on the sights and sounds of the red light district of Thailand. A glimpse into the infamous culture of tranvestitites in Thailand. What I do not understand is why other readers have such a hard time with the last picture. I symphatise with all the stick you get from people who just hate themselves. i really dont understand wats wrong wif the mentality of those who against posting nude picture. Relatively its soooooooooooooo much easier to just visit a porn website which post a much greater level of nudity, relatively children have higher chances to bump into that kind of website than visiting kennysia for a mere boobs picture.
And certainly i believe those who read kennysia.com must have certain level of maturity and they of course must have been exposed to nudity and porn industry.

kennysia already has good readership no matter what he post. We must appreciate that he actually made public his blog for us, he gave us insight to his life, his experiences, travels and any problems which he shared with us. We keep asking him to blog more blog more and when he does we find if there's any controversy in his posts and shoots it back at him, and advising him how to blog next time and what nots as if he is new to the world of blogsphere.

Some people are missing the point here. I think that those people criticise the last pic becos the last pic is indecent in the sense that it involves trading dignity for money. You may have different opinions about dignity, some may think it's okay as long as one pays and one agrees; but some others still frown at such transactions. Nobody's ethics is the "ultimate" right version, if you are about to shoot me that I am a conservative religious or whatsoever kuno person.
People who say "what's wrong with pictures with nipple" and "it's so much easier to visit porn site" - see, it's about the context, as someone said above. Just because porn sites are easily available, doesn't mean that every single site can now use this reason to justify putting any random indecent pic in any public place.
People who pull their triggers at everyone who disagrees with themselves are simply ignorant about the existence of different ethical frameworks. You have the right to judge the image as totally decent and educational; but others also have the right to view it as cheap. To think that your ethics is the only right version is arrogant.

I have to admit, the picture was a little unexpected for I don't remember seeing such pictures on this blog. Though so, I don't think this is at all being sexist, elitist and whatsoever insulting and on to the female.
Being in the sex trade, I think there are more extreme things done to her, like videos of her having sex with her customers and on. And obviously if she don't want that film/taken, she wouldn't even allow Kenny to hold that camera in front of her, let alone take a photo. Obviously when you take a photo, you usually post it on the net, or show it to your friends and on. Rarely do you take a photo and archive it in your computer before viewing it again 10 years again.
As for the part on children viewing the picture. Do you think it is better for a kid to view one picture of a breast or a hour long high-definition widescreen video with 5.1 surround sound of a group of people having sex together? It also applies to pornographic sites, they have warned you, whether you continue, is your choice.

Those that wrote long written arguments actually have taken into effort into presenting their views on this post. No matter right or wrong, I personally think that they presented a matured argument and it is good for a healthy debate, enlightening readers. Maybe this is how a BLOG SHOULD FUNCTION.
On the other hand, short posts, generalized statements, many of which are showing supports for Kenny and asking others that 'attack' Kenny to get a life or 'fuck off' or to avoid the blog has little or not substance in it at all. (Spam) HaHaHa
To me, I would not agree with the posting of the picture above or with Kenny's stand. This is because there are too many generalized conclusions or assumptions.
It is true that many transvestites say in Thailand are very open minded in exposing themselves. But I believe this is the tradition of the SEX and ENTERTAINMENT industries, not those of the transvestites.
People tend to relate these with the tradition of the transvestites is because most of them earn their living by such way. They are adults that can make sound choices on their own but do they have a choice? Regardless of gender, people do willing to do anything for money and so, if you do meet a real women that willingly agree to pose for topless photos, will you be posting it up?
The transvestites is indeed once a man. I major in Genetics and Molecular Biology in university and one of my lecturer's interest is in studying the effect of gene expression on brain function. =)
What I am trying to say is that the psychology of transvestites is as important in determining whether they are men or women, not just by their outer looks. They may be men outside but you can't tell what is inside. And if they do feel like a women inside and with all the cultural boundaries that affect real women in our society, how can we assumed that transvestites may not be affected as well? We all know that people don't change their sex for nothing.
Of course, I am not referring to the one in the picture. She may indeed be more than happy to pose topless, who knows? Anyhow, she is working in the street for a living, what do you expect? And there may be reason for that as well.
I just want to stress that not all transvestites are like that and thus does not justify us in treating them like a man. There are indeed differences in a transvestites and a man at least by the transvestites own view I assumed. And we must respect that.
Anyway, to put it short, the reason I don't agree with your picture posting is not due to our difference in opinion. The reason is that there are already a rather negative perception on the transvestites community regardless of place.
What is the first thought that comes into our mind when we mentioned or see a transvestites? Will that be a positive one? I let that for you all to think. I believe the picture posting further propagate certain negative perceptions on the community let alone inviting unnecessary ridicule from simple minded people.
To me, people become a transvestites because they choose to, so that they feel much better that way such that their body and soul can exist in peace with each other and we should respect that.

Lel, I am taking this opportunity to argue against your opinion, and is, also, targeted at the rest of the people who thought that this post is morally incorrect.
Well, take it this way, assume that Kenny Sia is a journalist, with a mission to explain to his reader the way things are in Thailand, the way the people are living their life, and what they make for living.
To me, the whole entry is about how tourism in Thailand has exploded to an extend where the sex industry had overtook and redefined the whole context of tourism in that country.
If moral is an issue to you, becoming a hooker to make a living is incorrect to begin with, they have a pair of hands and another pair of legs, they have brains to think, eyes to see and ears to hear, there are literally thousands of other available options in life to make a living out of.
And to add salt to this bitterness, the physically challenged or 'modified' the nature of your sexuality is offensive in any moral terms, it's against the culture as a whole, the religion, and against the nature of human being rights, there will be punishment from God, so don't worry about it.
Kenny Sia's intention is just to purely classifying this information specially to his read, and to ratify the problems that are already existed in the country.
And that this is what you are going to expect if you decide to visit Thailand in the future.

For example, say one day a poor soul is willing to put up a "stoning show", and in that show that guy is allowing people to hurl stones at him at a cost of 10 ringgit per stone. He did that because he's poor and need to raise fund for his sick child.
Now, if you are one of the spectators, would you stone him after paying? Would you be complacently watching the crowd stoning him, and justify the action by saying "hey he set up the stoning show in the first place, why are you criticising me? LOL *pick up another stone and throw him*"

I'm sure none of the people who criticize kenny above visited kennysia.com for the first time and then posted the comments. It's kenny's style that keeps readers coming back. That's what attracted me.

i must say this entry made me feel very sad for the Thais. There's no lack of nudity on the internet to be sure, or in Thai bars apparently, but if someone consents to selling him/herself out for a few measly dollars, is it really right to take advantage?

To take someone's picture at their 'lowest' state (i.e. naked / half naked) is understandable, provided that the other person don't mind being snapped.
To think that you actually put the picture up on your blog for laughs is vile. Although your intention was probably good (who knows), it is still demeaning to others.
Kenny, I don't know if you realize this but there are a lot of people out there with different mindset about this. Try to be more polite next time around just for the sake of the masses, or probably put a warning up on the header section telling people about what to expect.
