Short Talk:

The newpaper headlines say, PM quietly takes public transport to experience commuters’ problems.

Well if he's quietly taking public transport, how come there are so damn many cameras following him!

Thief Caught On Camera

I had wanted to post this up earlier but my friend didn't let me. She said it's too heartbreaking.

This happened last year, at a store called Milky Lane in Pavilion KL shortly after its grand opening. This friend of mine and I were sitting in store having coffee when her bag was mysterious stolen from right under her nose. Inside her bag was all her personal belongings including her latest paycheck, new phone and some jewellery.

She placed her big bag on the floor next to her chair while we sat back facing the entrance. That's when a dodgy Chinaman entered and swiped her bag away without anyone of us noticing. Lucky for him. If he were caught red-handed, I bet ya he'd be walking out of Pavilion with his testicles hanging from his teeth.

We notified mall security immediately when we realised her bag was stolen. As expected, they were sympathetic but they couldn't do much. All they did was offering her a shoulder to cry on.

A quick check with the store's CCTV recordings revealed the modus operandi of the thief in action.

The moral of the story is: buy insurance.

Posted by: (='.'=) at 24 August 2008 5:29 PM | Link to comment

i guess, the lesson here is "constant vigilante"

Do not leave your bag on the floor. If you must put your bag on the floor, put in front of you, touching your feet/ankle. So you would feel your bag against your skin.

Not to say your friend is careless, as I had been a victim once (snatch theft) so, nowadays I am very careful where I put my things.

I feel like I want to "belasah" that thief too. That kinda people should have syphilis that make their balls fall off.

Posted by: nomoreosim at 24 August 2008 6:14 PM | Link to comment

Should we catch the offender in public? I don't know. I saw a guy running away and another guy shouting at the back CATCH! MOLEST!
And when I did catch him, they beat him up.

Might be better to leave crimebusting to the police.

many things has happened in Pavilion KL

I have a friends working there and there have been countless cases of shoplifters, pick-pockets and thieves around.

Some places which I've heard that shoplifters struck were Qu*ckS*lver, R*xy, F*ssil, Sw*tch and many more! The worse part is, 80% of the shoplifters manage to get away with it!

I'm not saying Pavilion is a bad place to shop neither am I talking bad about Pavilion. I'm just saying despite being such a well known shopping complex,

(accidentally press the "publish" button)

.. it lacks proper security features and ability.

Lesson here is, everyone should take care of their personal belongings more closely. The idea for the incident not to happen is preventing it from happening in the first place! Don't give them the slightest opportunity to strike. Because these thieves are quick and sharp and will seize an open opportunity when it comes to their door step.

Regards.

i'm sorry to hear about this incident, however as with other readers, i too feel that calling the thief a "chinaman" is rude. although i was born and raised in australia, i am originally from mainland china. to me, it felt like you were labeling people from mainland china as thieves, and reinforcing that negative stigma i know many malaysians/singaporeans have of people from mainland china.

Don't be offended about me calling the thief a Chinaman.

Chinaman just means Chinese, not necessarily people from mainland China.

I'm a Chinese myself, so of course I'm entitled to call other Chinese Chinaman.

It's like African Americans calling each other "nigger" y'know?

I really don't get this; how can you leave a bag with stuff worth a few thousand bucks in it just lying on the floor, out of sight?

Ur friend is really dumb. To leave your shopping bags on the floor is one thing, to leave you HANDBAG on the floor is stupid, to leave it at the pathway is even stupider.

She learnt a lesson from this. She'll never leave her handbags lying around ever again.

It's an expensive lesson, but effective. As for the thief, he won't be able to do this unless u create the opportunity.

your friend was pretty careless to put her bag on the floor..

not to mention the careless shop keepers...why didn't they get suspicious of a man who just walked in to the store, order nothing, chose seat near you guys though in fact there're still a lot of empty seats and walked out right away..they should hire a security..

and that man is obviously not a pro..he looks awkward...keep looking back and forward..

well, lesson learned anyway..always put your valuable belongings on your lap.

I think most of the blame goes to the seating arrangements in these restaurants. They're so close, that you can't really notice much of what goes on under the chairs. Even if Kenny was sitting opposite his friend, they might've been so distracted with their conversation to notice what that fella was doing behind that girl.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend who had her bag stolen. I suppose we always have to be super-vigilant of our possessions!

About the Prime Minister taking public transport - I think it's an excellent idea for him to do so. It's counter productive of you to criticise the article title, just so you can sound funny.

In Melbourne our trains are really crowded too, and often have delays, yet our politicians are so slow to do anything about it - they have drivers or take cabs to work, so they don't understand how difficult it is to take public transport, and they don't bother to change anything. Good on the Prime Minister for making an effort!

I think its good that you decided to post it. I guess its an eye opener for us Malaysians, who don't take measures to protect our stuff.. I've personally had my hand phone stolen at a pasar malam, where they are so damn smart, they cut your bag. So yeah, we should all learn to be careful.

Posted by: Rarr at 25 August 2008 6:14 PM | Link to comment

Well, your dear friend is unfortunately, partly to blame. She created the opportunity. Shouldn't have left the bag on the floor in the first place especially that she had all her valuables in there. Careless or plain silly.

Posted by: Elsie at 25 August 2008 6:37 PM | Link to comment

Three things:

1) Your friend is stupid to leave her bags unattended

2) Your friend is stupid because it was Malaysia and thieves are everywhere

3) why are you two sitting side by side instead of face to face as any normal friends would? Too engrossed in some 'activities' under the table?

The moral of the story is: NEVER LEAVE ANY BAGS ON THE FLOOR.HANG IT TO YOUR NECK AT ALL TIMES,
EVEN WHEN YOU'RE EATING.
This happen to us while on holidays in Sabah.
We were having dinner in one of the big seafood restaurant. ( very famous and popular one and lots of tourist,{not to mention names} with CCTV but not working).
Our bag with money and all travelling documents and gone from under our table.
We are just stupid careless.
So be warned and be extra careful.

for all the stupid ppl who call other ppl stupid, i hope u will lose ur things soon after commenting like this.

first of all,the bag contained a lot of paperwork so it was very heavy. the first hour we(kenny and i and another girl in front of us) talked, i kept the bag on my lap until it was too much to bear and i put it in between my feet. with kenny's backpack and another shopping bag there too. in between my feet and the other girl's feet.

i NEVER put my things on the floor before this. i know it is a dangerous thing to do. but considering how heavy the bag was, and how tired i was (it was 9pm++ ald after a long day at work) and IN A SUPPOSEDLY 5STAR SHOPPING MALL, most of us wld do the same. some more, we werent not seated in a crowded area and very far into the shop.

if u watched the video properly, u wld see the thief tried to pull the bag a few times. bcoz it's too heavy anf far away from him.

dont worry. the pavilion management will hear from me again soon regarding this. im doing legal claims from them to get back my losses bcoz of their incompetent security guards within their premises.

a letter will be sent as soon as it's feasible for me to do the necessary.

and all the smart ppl who watched the video, see how long u can last without losing ur things. :)

yah. i shld have thought of that.

but i was too exhausted after a long day at work (awake since 6am, gone to 2 different events in different areas of pj and kl and gone to pick up some stuf for kenny b4 meeting kenny in pavilion for dinner and drinks with his friend etc)it makes it so damn much easier to be careless than usual. u tend to act without much afterthought.

furthermore, the other girl kenny was meeting that night i also met her for the very first time,i thought it wouldn't be nice of me to impose on her to put my 10kg bag next to her when all she wanted was to interview kenny for her master's thesis.

:)

Hm..just want to comment a few things on what "the victim' put up. Ok... yes we are sympathy for you for loosing your belongings and bags, that aside, what makes you think that sueing the Pavillion Management will set everything straight? For crying out loud, we are living in Malaysia. Unless u have just returned from some other country and totally has no idea how our coutnry's security has gone down the drain in recent years, no place in safe. Since you are putting your things to the floor cant you at least get your purse or anything valuable out? Like Srsly said, why cant you put it on a chair opposite where u can see it. You can write as many letter as you want but I dont think you can get anything out of it. What do you expect, you want their security guard to follow you everywhere you go??

i was just glad it wasnt a snatch thief. i could have been physically hurt. it's only some possessions that could be replaced. but this doesn't mean there wasn't a lot of stress and grief involved in replacing them (like ic and so on)

and i don't think anyone who wasn't there or involved in this should comment further on this. (kenny, can u please disable comments on this please considering the collective IQ of your readers is pretty low)

justone> i didn't say i wanted to sue them. that would incur so much more costs than what i have lost. i'm not that naive.

what so much difference does it make if i put it on the floor and the chair opposite me? what if the thief was daring enough to take it from the chair and ran?

i put down the bag for at most 10mins and we were about to leave. at the time of discovering the lost, it was only 9.35pm (video showed that the thief left at 9,21pm)which means, the security people could have sealed off the exits or done something on their part if they acted efficiently instead of dilly dally around taking their time to go to the scene and ask questions.

getting any shopping mall to take responsibility for the lack of security within their own premises is not something we as individuals can not do.

if i can not get back what i lost, at least i can make the management think twice about being so lax at doing their job. this is not something we all should just say "it's over and there's nothing we can do."

why should it?

this is no longer a matter of losing a bag. but the security within the premises of a so-called 5star shopping mall and no in any open area.

Posted by: the victim at 25 August 2008 10:46 PM | Link to comment

to think there will be better security at a place like Pavillion.

not really a great place when u have to b cautious half the time while intending to have a nice cuppa coffee on a weekend, no?

I would think twice to go there with my wife and kids, really.

considering how somebody would want peace-of-mind when going out with the family.

doesnt really help that the security can even allow themselves to be so lax. not in a so called "top-notch" shopping mall that prides itself as an exclusive shopping hub.

so much for expecting the basics from pavillion

Malaysia government, you have a good job compare to many other countries, but please make it better, there have been too much shit happening. Stop spending your people's money on stupid projects. Sometime just cut out a small portion (cost) of your giant building can help so much in our public safety/security, our job opportunities, education, culture.

Your people already work very hard days and nights to try to live a good life, but people are still quite suffering from low income.

Hence, crime rate ____ people's quality of life ____.

'pat''pat'.... I had the same grief this year earlier in the Jan, 3 days after I touched down in KL from overseas. Had my bag behind my bag on a well-known restaurant, supposedly got some stars hotel. Bag lifted right out from my back within 10 mins, with the waitresses taking order around the desk, with people sitting next to me. What caused me grief is that some items are not replaceable, they carry fond memories....., gifts from people 10 years ago.

The whole video doesn't seem right to me.

1. The camera was panning in that narrow angle and then zoom in on the scene. This shows the camera was being operated on manually. If not, then it has inbuilt intelligence to zoom in/out but it looks more to me like it's human-operated video recording.
2. If it was operated on manually, why was there no intervention from the security?

Kenny, spill the truth, were you asked to post this scripted scene, and why?

I checked the video. If you view closely, it's actually the video cam which is filming the TV which is zooming in. Not the security cam.

As for the rest of your question, it is pretty redundant.

So moral of the story for those nincompoops out there., open your eyes bigger before you start accusing and causing a huge rigamarole.
