firstly it's not natural for someone to speak that way. you keep on going about how natural it is but the accent is the consequence of the current social conventions.

it would of course be considered much more natural for a chinese person to speak chinese and a german to speak german, etc. rather than someone speaking with an accent so i don't know why you are calling Mix an idiot. please read your own sentence "but not very fluent and it is natural of them alright" natural to make a serious statement (e.g. proposal) in a language they are not fluent in? doesn't make much sense to me.

in many asian (especially oriental) communities the use of english is considered "cool" to some extent, this is evident in the excessive amounts of "engrish" that is everywhere in japan, korea, china, etc. this is why people adopt english names and the reason "people can't pronounce my name" is invalid in an environment where people can generally speak the language. so why are you
called david seow? it may have been because your parents named you as such or whatever but ultimately having an anglicised name serves no purpose, as is speaking with an accent.

all it proves is that the person is trying to speak english but is simply not vey good at it and is making an attempt at trying to sound good.

I have been in Australia for more than 4 years now but I still sound like a Malaysian (with fewer "lah"s and "loh"s) when I speak to non-Malaysians. And when I speak to other Malaysians, I revert to full Manglish. Almost everybody else here is like that, except a few who chose to do the full local accent because they're actually successful at faking it.

People simply shouln't try to speak with an accent that they're not accustomed to. If you're good at faking it and manage to prevent sounding stupid, then fine up to you. If you can't, then haiyah just speak like yourself lah.

Even if that is the case, why can't a person propose in a language they're not fluent in? It may seem pointless to you but maybe it is because english is the only language that they both use to communicate.

You don't like my criticism fine. I am just defending the issue of people being over sensitive about someone faking their accent. I have heaps of chinese friends who date singaporeans/ malaysians and hence the couple communicate through english.

Point to think here. Why can't one being not fluent but yet natural at the same time? It is common to be so. e.g I speak malay naturally with an "accent" but yet I am not fluent.

It is not a matter of what you claimed as japanese/koreans trying to act cool using english. Hence, don't just jump into an offensive approach with what I said, although I admit I was rather angry (as judged from my comment) at people being prejudice towards others "faking their accent".

I don't want to argue with you point by point because this is meant for their marriage. No offence here. Congrats to the couple! Cheers!

you guys are so funny.. stop commenting about faking accents etc. I think what he did is very sweet and I am happy for both of them.

I have lived in USA for over 5 years now. Sometimes it is hard for Americans to understand us when we speak Manglish. They think that we are speaking a totally different language.

That's why sometimes I have to speak with an "accent", if you'd like to call it that. What I am doing is merely to pronounce certain words properly, in a way that they would understand. For example, instead of waTer for H20, i would say waDer, with emphasis on the D. It just makes it easier to communicate that way.

I have a friend who speaks PERFECT singlish. Even with my Lahs etc, I cannot hope to achieve her level of singlish, and many of her American friends, find it hard to understand her in her first year that she was in USA. Now, she speaks English with an accent and could communicate better with them.

I do agree that accents should be used only in the right circumstances, but sometimes it is hard to switch after being overseas for so long. So if you have friends who have been overseas for some time, please understand them and not say that they are trying to fake accents.
