Short Talk:
Because I've completely sworn off writing anything to do with race, religion or politics here, I'm gonna plug blogs that do those stuff and kick ass in the process.
Seriously, I like Otto's take on multiculturalism in Malaysia. Why do we always pride ourselves in being made up of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans and so on, when a foreigner would just look at us and go "meh... Asians."
About The 18-Year-Old Chinese Girl Who Got Kidnapped
A few days ago, my phone went beeping with this SMS from an unknown number.

Needless to say I was quite disturbed that things like this is happening in our own backyard, especially in Saujana Carpark which is located smack in the middle of the city centre. Apart from some petty burglary cases, serious crime such as kidnapping is still considered relatively rare here. My only consolation was that it wouldn't be too difficult for people to spot a green Proton Wira with a Peninsular Malaysian car plate number in Kuching.
But a couple of hours after I received that message, I was sent YET ANOTHER SMS about the same incident.

Immediately, I smell a rat. Not just any rat. A big fat juicy rat.
Because this time round the SMS claimed that the girl is kidnapped from a different carpark. But therein lies the problem. There's no such place called "Parade Carpark" ANYWHERE in Kuching!
So I asked around online and as it turned out, not just me but tons of other people had received similar SMSes. Some got "Subang Parade Carpark", others got "Ipoh Parade Carpark". But the plot is still largely the same: some 18-year-old Chinese girl was kidnapped at some mysterious unidentified carpark in a green Proton Wira aeroback bearing the car registration number WFE 2365, and message ending with a plea to "forward 2every1".
Then yesterday as I was flipping through old newspapers, the penny dropped. Or as my Mandarin teacher would say, "water drop stone come out".

Turns out that the abducted girl had already been rescued ages ago. The SMS was one day late. And best of all, the carpark in question was Ipoh Parade Carpark.
What I wanna know is, how the hell did "Ipoh Parade Carpark" become "Parade Carpark" become "Subang Parade Carpark" become "Saujana Carpark"?
Damn, we are so hopeless playing this game of Chinese whisper. Either that, or there are lots of stupid 18-year-old Chinese girls walking around in empty carparks waiting to be kidnapped.

But never mind that. Because what really irked me was the fact that there are people actually forwarding these SMSes to their friends. If it's a forwarded e-mail, I can understand because e-mail is free. But come on lah, why are these people, happily wasting 20c per SMS to forward the SMS to everyone in their phone book? What is going on?
Then hor, some people even find the time to delete the word "Ipoh Parade Carpark" and replace it with stuff like "Subang Parade Carpark" to confuse people. OI, VERY FUN IS IT?!

THEN there are those who forward these messages WITHOUT EVEN READING IT. If this thing is happening in Ipoh, keep it in Ipoh. If it's happening in Subang, keep it in Subang.
Why forward me an SMS about a girl who got kidnapped in Ipoh when I'm staying 1000km away in Kuching? What do you expect me to do?

"S" is for Sabah lah! AT least where car plates are concerned. We Sarawakians have to make do with the "Q" rejects!
Typical brainless people. Dont have any sense at all.

Hi Kenny. It's interesting to stumble upon your blog, and wow, I didn't know you were a Malaysian! Awesome! =)
And by the way, regarding the news of the girl being abducted.. just wanna fill you in that the girlfriend's boyfriend is my cousin brother. -_-'' such a terrible news to receive from my mom last night. Right now, just a simple request.. to pray for the girl who's still unconscious in hospital. Let's all pray for her recovery.
Love your blog to bits, keep the posts coming!

well i think it's alright to send an sms to people in kl even though the incident happened in ipoh, as it's very possible for the kidnappers to drive down to kl or anywhere along the peninsular...
but kinda dumb to send to sarawak la, expect the car to fly over there meh

Yeah it's just like those 'so-and-so is kidnapped' spam you often get in your email inbox. It may get the message to many at first, but it quickly loses relevance and the message gets distorted somewhere down the line.

i think the sender is just panicking. You just dont have time to think, you see. How are you going to be selective about who living in Ipoh, SUbang, Canada, AUs etc?
If you're gonna go through the whole phonebook and look for whoever living in that particular area, it might be too late. The girl might have been raped, or whatever worst case scenario you can think of.
And do you really seriously think the police would despatch the entire police force to rescue the girl if not for the widespread smses?
I think the kudos should be for those who forwarded the message around. This shows they really cares. I wouldn't mind spending a few ringgits on the smses, if that's what it may takes to have her rescued.
Wouldn't you be thankful for the entire chinese community if you were the boyfriend? Does the "wrong parade" thingy really matters, at that time?

Although the superman pose is hilarious, props for that because it diffused the whole seriousness of the issue. This is indeed no laughing matter as more and more petty crimes are committed each day. Especially in dark public places like carparks and parks. The people who forwarded the messages at their own expense obviously wanted to do something to prevent this. Only matter is that most people don't look at their handphones every second. Thus the delay and as Si gay said, you wouldn't think where the receiver was, you just wanted to help. Again this is in Ipoh, and ipoh people are scarred by what happened to Canny Ong two years ago. This isn't the first and probably won't be the last time this happens. A Panic over nothing is better than a person raped or worse; killed.

In Ipoh everyone refers to Ipoh Parade as simply "Parade". Maybe some Ipoh person forwarded it to some Klang Valley friend, who assumed that Parade meant Subang Parade, and added the "Subang" in it.

But if I don't forward it because I'm stingy and don't wanna waste my precious credit, and the kidnapping thingy turns out to be a real case, then jia lat lor. Say bye bye to the girl lar like that.

Dear Kenny,
Thank gudness u post this up.
Hopefully this may educate the public not to send sms / emails senselessly and screw up my brain juices. (Actually I panicked and send out the msges to all my contacts in Yahoo Messenger. Big honky-tonk mistake for me). If u havent notice, some even got the car number wrong. (I got the WFE 235. *smoke-coming-out-frm-me-nostrils) I really hav no idea how can fwded msges on instant messages be so awfully off mark.
At least get the details frm the source of the sms / msges / emails to know the details / confirmation like; date it happened, where it actually happened (town / state preferably) and if the gal had been found yet. (Which I did only after a friend asked me where it actually happened. *head-banging-the-wall)
I had the same repeated senario w the tsunami child with the missing parents / relatives. It was late by few months n still people kept forwarding it. At the end, we discovered that the child is now safe in the hands of her love ones. Then we gotta forward the updated news to the whole list of people who got the emails to advice them to stop forwarding the emails.
It just shows how senseless people (me one of them) can forward those messages without thinking first, especially when it comes to kidnapping. So please do get the correct information before forwarding them else it could spread mass wildfire panic (especially for trigger friendly people like me). For those who do receive the messages, do ask the source for confirmation (date, town/state/correct location) before sending them out.
It's our duty as the knowledge generation to obtain the correct information before mass sending em out so we wouldnt get our arse kicked or ego bruised.
PS : Wondering if u could post up some really good sites to inform the public the difference between spam and real news if u know any? Thanks in advance.
Learnt-from-my-mistake,
Angie

Although it's a good idea to alert ppl (esp ladies) on the dangers lurking in dark, isolated car parks, these smses sounded more like someone was trying to instigate racial hatred and suspicion, which is really worrying. Would it make ppl breathe easier supposing the sms went "chinese girl abducted by chinese men?" or "malay girl abducted by malay men?" What's the point of mentioning that it was a chinese girl that was abducted by malay men, other than to incite racial disharmony?

I completely agree with Titoki. Why do they have to be specific about race? Not as if you are going to be able to identify the crime without more details. why does race suddenly become the number one issue?
So some stupid people suddenly start enjoying this news and have to forward it from state to state in malaysia, inciting panic and racial tension in each city... how dumb is that.

On the race issue, I do think that there's a need to mention it if someone is kidnapped, this narrows down the target for people who noticed.
"Man/woman, lighter/darker skin, possible race, body (slim, athletic etc.), age"
Chill out, everywhere else in the world, when a suspect is to be identified, race is definitely mentioned.

Please observe carefully how the race issue of who kidnap who was exaggerated. I believe this is an orchestrated rumour mongering attempt to incite racial unrest among our society.
Please read http://ktemoc.blogspot.com/2006/09/warning-hate-mails-wild-rumours-abound.html
Think twice before forwarding racial driven hate mails and messages.

Looks like an edited figure of kennyman.
Still remember the forward e-mail of a China fat boy? His face was edited to Doraemon, Batman, Superman, Leonardo De Caprio, bla.... haha!
Kenny's cheek looks alike that boy, from this angle! maybe someday his face will be edited as well. OMG >.

Tasha Lim, I am Malaysian. :) Where do you think I was from? Anyway, which girl were you talking about? 'cos the girl involved in my story was not unconsvious.
Darth Fudgester + ngy + andylkw, my point EXACTLY. This goes back to the story we learnt in Primary One about the boy who cried wolf.
Pei Sheah, nolah don't think it's them eventhough they're the ones who profit the most from this whole shenanigans.
Initial Ding, I will not forward it before I establish it's authenticity, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for the car.
mia, not stainless steel meh? :P
bugbear1986, I returned it. My LG Chocolate was a review unit.
Ray, life is same ol' same ol'.
dabiankenny, you see his photo everday at school you still dunno who he is!
Rootified, oi. screw you! :P
Rina + Nobody, your intentions are good I know.
johnny + nik, no. :) It was Photoshop.
MillyVanilly + Christina + James, I agree. People are making this out of a racial issue.
Disappointed, it's alright if you wanna believe every single thing you read without any skepticism. One question though: where is parade carpark in Kuching?
pablopabla, OI! I AM NOT SIAPERMAN LAH OK! Sounds so horrible! :(

Posted by: James at 04 September 2006 8:54 PM | Link to comment
well, let me give u my point of view.
i have since forwarded the sms that was sent to me. mine was the "parade carpark" version. why? coz i believe that the public do play an important role in helping the police nab these criminals. so, if i can help in anyway, i definately will. therefore i do not agree with u that it is a waste of money.its just 20 cents. If it could save someones life, wouldn't it be worth it?
but yes, i agree with you that it was useless to send an incomplete sms with insufficient facts. moreso if they send it to ppl staying far away, like kuching in your case. the nearest "parade" i know is subang parade.
i guess many will agree with me. we civilians still do play and important role in keeping the society safe, but be wise and discreet about handling information.

Heh. I got that text while I was sleeping, and deleted it after reading it I'd deleted it straightaway. Why? *Blink* something in my mind said: false alarm. Only in later afternoon my mind started registering the fact that I got the Subang Parade rooftop carpark version, and Subang Parade doesn't have a rooftop carpark as far as I know.
It's sad tho', that the first reaction towards reading all this is that it's not a authentic text for help.

This type of SMS is a abuse to kind-hearted public. This is similar to the story we used to hear when we are little 'lang lai le' (the wolf comes). When a same lie repeats itself for 3 times, and the actual comes at 4th, no one is ready to help. In this pathetic society, shouldn't we be united and against the devil? Instead, we are just fooling among ourself. Think big! Be more vigilant before it is too late.

IF the information in the sms is clear and correct lah.. if like what you said in this posting, then just omitted it.. wasting time & $ only..

actualli this 18 yrs old gal got abducted from ipoh parade. the robbers want the car as well as the gal. they wanted to rape the gal but bcoz of the widespread of the incident tru sms....they let the gal go back n later dumped the car somewher else. at that moment i think they realized how terrible the condition was bcoz everyone in ipoh got the msg!! i noe tat bcoz i live in ipoh. i mean hey at tat time they wont noe tat the forwarded msgs tell different things whether it's ipoh parade....subang parade.....chinese gal.....malay gal......they juz noe everyone noes bout it. So, is it still an useless act like how kenny discussed? or did it juz save the gal from being raped?

I concur. If the men had indeed released her because of the widespread info to everybody - Then I'd say that it was well worth the effort (forwarding the message).
The description in message could have been better though.

No, people. Like some of you said, we cannot tell if it is a spam or a real thing. Yes it is effective but people will get tired and starting to ignore REALLY important messages because of the overwhelming sms. I think what we should do or the authorities should do is to create a sms center with the sole purpose of distributing sms about any major crime that has credible eyewitnesses. If people want to be alerted about such thing, they can just sign up. Isn't that simple?
The police already has a number for people to sms any crime. Why don't they do the reverse too? Just MAKE those telcom send crime alert sms for free! Hey, when I see the sms being sent by "MAXIS CENTRE", I know it is real.

here are lots of stupid 18-year-old Chinese girls walking around in empty carparks waiting to be kidnapped.
Kidnapping doesn't happen just because 'stupid' 18-year-old Chinese girls waiting to be kidnapped. A crime happened because the kidnapper did the kidnapping. Don't put the blame solely on the victim. If you were robbed, were you guilty of displaying your stereo?
