Eten M600 PDA Phone Review

Find the best deals on new PDAs. Get customer ratings and professional price comparison before you buy. Read how pdas are being used on college campuses by keeping students connected. Also find great deals on pda accessories to go along with your new phone. You can also use your pda to search in certain libraries and have access to the information right at your fingertips.
A while ago I was contemplating to get myself a new phone.

When O2 announced the release of Atom, I was almost certain that that would be my next phone. As it turns out, the reviews online weren't too positive. Many who bought the Atom were terribly disappointed and agreed that it was a waste of RM2,988 that could've gone into a brand new notebook instead.

Enter the lesser-known Taiwanese brands Dopod 838 and the Eten M600. Compared to the Atom, these two models are cheaper and comes with their own sets of extras.

The Dopod 838
The Dopod 838 came with built-in keyboard, which personally I despise on a PDA Phone. It's so ugly!
The Eten M600 suits my tastes better, so I purchased it for RM2,450 (with free 256MB SD Card thrown in) at The Gadget Shop in Lowyat Plaza KL. That's a savings of over half a grand compared to the O2 Atom!

Here's the stuff inside the box: the M600, a leather case, a USB cradle, earphones, installation CD, and some weird pieces of paper with all those legal mumbo-jumbo that nobody reads.

I have to admit, the M600 unit itself doesn't have the sex appeal of the O2 Atom. The casing itself is made of cheap black plastic instead of those shiny brushed metal cases that all self-respecting PDAs boast. The programmable buttons at the front are particularly filmsly-looking.

The stylus is secured in a hole underneath the PDA. Compared to most other PDAs, the stylus here is big and long so it feels like a dickonosaurus holding a Kilometrico pen instead of holding a toothpick.

The placement of the stylus is a lil bit unconventional, but this is actually a more convenient location once I get used to it.

On the side, there are buttons to activate the camera, a volume-control, a voice command button (for moments when you feel like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible), and a tiny soft reset button.

On the top of the M600 is the power switch and a SD Card slot. I like how Eten retains the use of legacy SD Cards. Both the O2 Atom and Dopod 838 forces you to use the new mini-SD Cards, which is considerably more expensive while offering no significant size reduction.

Compared to the O2 Mini, the Eten M600 is slightly bigger, thicker.
It comes equipped with a 1.3 Megapixels and offers resolutions of up to 1280x960.

Photo of a handicapped scorpion I took this morning with my phone
Like every other phone cameras in its class, the M600 suffers from obvious image quality issues. The phone camera is obviously no replacement for a dedicated digital camera. But at least you can take spy shots of random people without them knowing. ;)

Here's the M600 sitting on its UFO-like USB cradle. They're not the sexiest looking combination of them all, but owning the M600 is like dating an ugly girl. You don't really like it at first, but it grows on you after a while.

Connectivity-wise, the M600 offers all the options under the sun, except infrared connection. Besides, which loser uses infrared these days?

It supports WiFi which means you can log on to the Internet for free at Starbucks, read kennysia.com, or even make a free long-distance phone call using Skype. I called Australia last night and the quality is just like a normal telephone call, albeit a little laggy.

The Eten M600 runs the latest Windows Mobile 5.0, which is a great piece of software! The number of things you could do with this new OS GREATLY surpasses any other phones available in the market today. Make no mistake about it, this is THE MOST advanced PDA Phone operating system out there.
(Wow, that rhymes.)

Yes, I need a thousand-dollar PDA to remind me all important things, like what time wrestling is on TV.
Too bad it's a Microsoft, which means your phone will crash half the time and you're gonna reset it almost EVERY SINGLE FREAKIN' DAY.
It's true. I woke up late for a dinner once because my phone hanged and the alarm didn't go off. Dammit Bill Gates, FIX the core issues first BEFORE updating your product!

I used the RM500 I saved from not buying the O2 Atom to get myself a wallet-sized portable 'Bluetoot' keyboard from ThinkOutside.
It's pretty cool.

It flips...

Unfolds...

And voila! A full-sized keyboard right in front of ya!

Blogging on the go. Woot!

I had the Sony Ericsson K700i before this and although it had served me well for a good 14 months, I find it falling short in many areas as the perfect all-in-one mobile device. For my PDA, I had the trusty 4-year-old Compaq iPAQ 3870 which I find too bulky, so usually I left it at home to rot when I go out of the house.

What I need is a gadget, small enough to fit into my pants, combines all the functionalities of phone, PDA, and a basic camera to take those rare once-in-a-lifetime shots.
Of course I could always do this...

The kennysia.com Ham-Pa-Lang Pow-Ka-Leow Nokia PDA Phone with Camera. On sale NOW!
... but heh, I think I want something a lil more practical. ;)

:-)

Inbam, Dopod 818 is good but it has a slower processor compared to the Eten. The extras it have are stuff that I don't really need.

Nice phone. PDA itself is good but not the Microsoft. I've had an O2 Mini and it sux too much.
1. PIctures taken have blue dots on them if not exposed to enuff light
2. The phone hang and freeze!!!
3. The earphone quality isn't good enuff for sucha good looking phone.
After holding for 2 months i sold it for AUD500 (RUGI pula)
Just personal view, dont buy O2 if u'r thinking so.

O_o
Am I the only one here who's slightly disturbed by the scorpion pic? And especially by Kenny's blase caption of it? - pointing out a handicapped scorpion the same way I'd point out a dog licking his balls (the dog's, not Kenny's).
Ppl, it's a scorpion, a FRIGGIN' SCORPION!! Don't these things kill you?!! Is no one amazed by the fact that Kenny has a scorpion for a housemate?
For shame, Kenny!!! Endangering your life like that just for a pic of a handicapped scorpion! (Unless you took that pic perched out of harm's way on a stool. In which case, you WUSS!)

My ipaq 4150 used to hang alot too, but i updated something in it (was it the rom? or the software version? bah i dunno, been too long ago) and all my hanging blues went away. Not sure if it would apply to you or not but it's always worth a search!

err... i think the scorpion isn't lethal. I've seen it in my old primary school playground. o.O

The O2 Atom and the Dopod are from the same manufacturers actually.
And wow. Phones are not really any cheaper in Malaysia. Have you ever considered buying from Singapore?

hey kenny, what 3rd party app do you use to blog on a pocket pc?
i have an ipaq hx4700 - got it when it just came out coz i liked the 4" screen and the 624mhz processor. it's running on windows mobile 2003 se (the option to upgrade to windows mobile 5.0 is not available yet) and i use the default ie to surf.
i can reply comments using the ipaq but for some reason, i can't log into movable type. it just doesn't like the cgi login though the comments cgi works fine.
thus, i can't actually update the blog but i can reply comments using the standard ie browser. what browser are you using to log into mt?
memory is not a problem coz i stuffed it with a 256 mb cf card and a 512 mb sd card. i just need windows mobile 5.0 (damm hp, it was supposed to be out ages ago).
so yeah, what browser are you using to update? or do you use the mt email update plugin?
cheers!

andrew, are you kidding me? Scorpions are one of the deadliest critters around. They ARE lethal.
mia, you wish. ;)
Angela, it's alright I found the ROM update.
Andre, it's not any cheaper in Singapore either. Besides, if I get it from SG, warranty would be a hassle.
killuminati, I'm using MovableType 3.2 and the CGIs work like a charm on Internet Explorer in WM5. Hmm... maybe you should consider upgrading your MT?

I never see the point of PDA - the most i can see is a music playing, 2MP cam HP - e.g. SE w800i... But that's just me, I rather have a 12" laptop (you can have linux is you want, go go open source :P)
But good blogging - lol at your Ugly girl metaphor.
Posted by: Colin at 27 January 2006 5:33 AM | Link to comment
kenny, yeah i never thought of that! i already upgraded to mt 3.2 and it works on the ipaq hx4700 w/o 3rd party apps. i used to run an old version of mt so that's the problem. cheers!
now all i need is for hp to buck up and release wm 5.0 so i don't have to charge the ipaq all the time or move data to the cf/sd cards...damn volatile memory. idiots...that's how i lost all my data (work related) coz i forgot to charge the ipaq. wm 5.0 is the way to go...
Colin: pda's are great for reminders. i've been using them for a long time - used to be a palm user and then switched to pocket pc. it's good for remembering appointments, meetings, taking notes, recording audio etc. i prefer a straight pocket pc instead of a phone/pda combo.
i have a notebook running debian and windows xp, but the ipaq is MUCH easier to carry around. can't really stuff a notebook in the pocket. ;)
jesus christ, it's 6 am in the morning and i'm still up surfing blogs. wtf is wrong with me.

Having used and experienced a lot of 3in1, 4in1, etc systems, I prefer them to be separated for contigency situations.
So, I used my iPaq4350 for data, AWG 825 for Primary communications, SE T630 for secondary communications, and a FujiFilm S5500 for photos. Clunky but reliable. Ha ha ha ha

scorpions with claws bigger then its tails lump are NOT deadly.. cez their main defence is the claws... scorpions with small and thin claws, but with huge tails like kenny's dick-nosorous is DEADLY (sorry kenny gotto describe it right..)!! i saw that from animal planet with crocodile hunter... even himself is affraid touching it... now, lets go watch discovery channel, to see how crab have sex with lizard!! on wei!!

unless you are allergy to scorpion stings, u can die from any scorpion stings, ranging from scorpion poke u with pencils to really stings the ass out of u... but anyway, we should treat pets with respect, we should always keep a safe distance from scorpions and poke them with sticks... then throw them into fish tank to see if it swim like pranws and catch fish..

good stuff! WM5 rocks. i have a hw6515 and the only thing i miss is WM5 :p
btw, darn, the problems you mentioned are to do with the phone, not the software :D except the hanging, of course..
realised alarms in particular are prone to hang - hah, kenny, you realised that too now. mine hangs if i set two alarms together, but can't wake up from the first (so i don't cancel it): the phone never stops the first alarm, basically. so when the second one comes, it doesn't know what to do and just stops there, even if i reset. only thing to do is wait for it to think it through. i can't believe such a simple thing wasn't fixed! damn. otherwise, congrats on a great phone!
ya, nxt time buy in singapore: cheaper cheaper cheaper!

Hi Kenny,
Stumbled upon your entry while searching for comments on Eten M600 PDA phone. Are you still using it? If so, how it is after one year of use? Would you recommend me to buy this one or would you suggest other better options (like HP 6828 and Dopod
818 Pro)?
I'd like your comment: is it ok to buy a used Eten M600 unit at RM 850?
Hope you would reply - thanks!
