The Sarong Party Girl Controversy
This entry is not-safe-for-work, so make sure your boss, workmates, husband, wife, sisters, brothers, children and doggies are not around you before you continue reading.
Local newspapers. Its no secret I don't like them. I've said a long time ago that the day newspapers here stop publishing photos of politicians hitting gongs at some stupid show-off VIP event is the day I'll celebrate by shaving the hair off my legs and cook soup with it.
Yesterday The Star reported how an erotic blogger known as Sarong Party Girl flashed her titties on her blog.

Sarong Party Girl is a 19-year-old fetish model who writes quite impressively considering her age.
Now I've read Sarong Party Girl's blog a long time ago, and I'll readily admit that I'm not a fan of hers. Its very difficult for me to like her considering often she praises how good Caucasian men are in bed compared to Chinese guys. Its very depressing. And as a Chinese guy myself, she made me feel... inadequate.
But yet, as much as I disagree with her ideologies, I feel compelled to defend her in this situation. Mostly because the mainstream media, against her wishes, essentially made a mountain out of a molehill and in the process humiliate her publicly.
Think about what you'd feel like if you're in her situation. You talk about blogs not respecting defamation laws. How about the mainstream media for Christ's sakes?

She's been baring her body since long long time ago. Its on her masthead. How come no news reports then?
Yes, she showed her neng-neng on her blog. Big frickin' deal. Porn stars have been putting naked pictures of themselves on their websites since The Big Bang. Some people even put nude pictures of other people on their blog. Isn't that worse? Why report it now?
You said they are porn stars, so its different. But hey, she's a fetish model. Posing nude is as common as changing underwear for her. Why draw the line?
"What she has done reflects badly on her parents." said (NTU staff member) Ng Heng Ghee. Its like going on newspaper and said "Eh your father never teach you one ar?" Typical attitude! How other people teach their daughter you also want to kacau. If you're so concerned why don't you adopt her instead?
They even interviewed lawyer Jonathan Kok on obscenity laws. Jonathan Kok don't talk Kok lah. What obscenity laws?

Here's the original picture that made the headlines. What is so obscene about it anyway?
I like it how he said "on the internet it's a grey area" in reference to that black and white picture. Watch the pun. Heh, lawyers are funny.
Look we're not talking about a 60-year-old ah pek flashing his wrinkly virtual kuku-chiaw on his blog here ok. We're talking about a sweet 19-year-old girl baring her equally sweet pair of papayas on her blog.
Gee thanks for treating a woman's naked body like tits its the most disgusting thing on Earth. Pretend feminism never happened. Obscenity laws my arse.

Obscenity laws? I'll teach you obscenity laws!
Stupid newspapers.
Flash your titties on your blog big deal ah? Come interview me lah!

The Straits Times which reported it in their 'home' section ended with the quote from the guy going "her parents don't know how to teach her" or something to that effect. Now, the thing is this: what does this have anything to do with anyone or her parents? I don't see her flashing a nekkid picture of Mommy and Daddy.

No big deal. Hey, I have an idea, let's all bloggers put our naked photos online and see how the media handle this issue... the asia society should learn to appreciate body as a form of art, God's creation.

with regards to NTU SCI's Ng Heng Ghee's comment of "what she done reflect badly on her parents", does he refer to his own parents or he not a good parent himself by visiting such undesirable site to see the picture??

I think what she did was artistic, not pornographic. A form of expression. I don't see anything wrong with it. Er, nice boxers Kenny!

Hillarious blog, once again. I have enjoyed reading Sarong Party Girl for a while now and I feel it is a pity that society has infringed on her privacy and have painted her with the scarlet letter, so to speak. It is a shame that in this day and age we still have to deal with being judged my narrow minded biggots who probably jacked off to the picture in the first place.

Hahhahahahah!
Posted by: FF at 13 June 2005 11:01 AM | Link to comment
Oh what is the bloody fuss about anyway.
Ng Heng Ghee's comment is so typical in our society today.
Just because someone is not walking on the side as everybody else, it doesn't mean that its the fault of their parents/family.
Its shameful because people think its shameful.
Likewise, if she's comfortable with it, I don't think she really gives a rat's ass what everyone else thinks. Which is always cool.

It must have been 50 or 60 years ago when the US publicly debated nudity/sexuality in the film industry when it first appeared on the silver screen. After getting through the first culture shock, it hasn’t generated much excitement until the infamous “I did not have sex with that woman”. The new definition of what sex technically is according to the president kind of help fills a slow news day, and reporters love it as their jobs are done for them before they even show up at work.
I suspect this is the case here where it involves a bit of both; nudity (rather artistic if I might add, under broad lighting with all those dynamic triangular visual formations in BW) on local blog in a rather conservative society, and combined with a day where those supposedly-people-representatives have got neither ribbon nor cake to cut. This suddenly becomes a news piece for our conventional prints/media, which are basically lazy and excel at recycling news. This is where I believe blog/vlog will have its place in our less open and subtly controlled society. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for an open society where issues could be raised freely and examined closely regardless of the medium, and without the fear of “defamation” lawsuit, as those merlions are constantly subjected to.
Predictably the conventional prints/media find excitements in the more opened and genuine blog/vlog clearly shows that their days and relevance are numbered.

i see alot some comments here, about how there's nothing wrong posting our naked photos and all but come on, let's be honest, the SPG may be a pretty 19 yr old with nice chest, but not everyone is going to look naked, Art Form or not. Some rules in society are there for a reason.
I mean, it's nice and all to see kenny naked once in a while, but do you really want to see your parents naked? Your neighbours walking down their streets with their bulu bulu sticking out everywhere in a pair of jogging shoes as they walk the dog? Or see our some old minister on TV with his saggy tits and small member as he delivers a prize to some young buck-naked 9 year old boy with rosy cheeks who just won a spelling bee contest? Whoa now that last picture was politically wrong.
Be realistic, people. The issue was certainly blown out of proportion by some talking kok but you don't have to blow it any bigger than it really needs to be.
the media may be idiots most of the time, but that's why they call it media entertainment.
Posted by: taste at 13 June 2005 3:02 PM | Link to comment
Good one, Kenny.
I think 'conservative' people who refuse to admit the beauty of the human form says nudity is pornographic lah. Michaelangelo's David also nude, how come no one criticises the sculpture?
Sculpture then ok, is it? Nude person, cannot?
Aiyah the girl can do whatever she wants with her body.

I hate it how people bitch about other people's blogs. Especially a freaking news paper. So what if she posted a nude picture of herself? You can find literally million of pictures of nude women online. So what's new? Why not complain about the amount of free porn online instead of a girl who decided to post a naked picture of herself on her BLOG. A blog is someone's personal journal, so it's up to the author to do what he/she likes. Why go write a freaking news on it? I feel like going on a rage now. Stupid newspaper...

Hey Kenny,
Great write up. Highly amusing. I'd like to offer you a helpful tip regarding that picture of the thestar.com.my website. Instead of taking a picture of it (the bright centre was a dead giveaway), you could press Shift-Print Screen and paste it on your favourite graphics editor program i.e. MS Paint (assuming you're using Windows)
Keep it up. Good stuff.

If some old guy did a nude of himself and posted it on his blog, is it still okay? Or do you need to be 19, pretty and female to post a picture on your blog?
The old man's not pretty enough or good enough for you? Who says? Our collective libidos?
The fact of the matter is, the post that generated so much controversy was ill-timed, ill-advised and ill-executed. None of that was the Press' doing, it was hers.
You're right. It isn't Internet pornography. Internet pornography at least attempts some kind of lip service to make sure that minors do not view their content. SPG didn't even bother.
Frankly I'm kind of embarassed, because now people are going to think blogger and see her naked ta-tas. So much for the fight for respectability, eh?

i tend to agree with the minorities here (e.g. taste), Advocates might claim that it is her own right and freedom, true but if her behaviour adversely impact on others, it's not solely her own matter anymore. she is invariably leading by examples that says see, it is ok to bare, that it is ok to be indecent, that it is ok to defy your parents wishes.. blah blah blah..
that being said, i do not see y ppl have to create a big fuss outta this.. this issue is debatable in every sense, depending on which view you back.. ask me, i wouldn't be an avid supporter for her. imagine i've a child who do that, i would indefinitely go ga-ga.. -_-|||

I read with much amusement your commentary on the SPG controversy. Being Singaporean living in Geneva, I have the misfortune of only learning about all things Singaporean a little late. And I actually found out about this hooha from that wonderful little blogger we all know and love - XiaXue. I am not a fan but find her annoyingly addictive - like a scab you know you are not supposed to peel off but pick at all day long anyway. Her English does suck big time. Anyway, I agree with your thoughts on the SPG saga. Leave her alone. Finally a hot Singaporean chick blogger with a fine command of the English language. And ballsy enough to be truthful about her lust for ang moh men. And leave her parents alone too. As you say, don't kacau others and say other peerpers parents.

Nude blog photos draw foreign attention
By Melissa Lwee
FOREIGNERS have joined local bloggers in discussing The Straits Times' report of the 19-year-old Singaporean girl who posted nude pictures of herself on her blog.
Some bloggers have said that there is nothing wrong with posting nude pictures online at www.sarongpartygirl.blogspot.com by the girl who is known only as Sarong Party Girl.
Mr Lee Kin Mun, 35, who writes under the moniker Mr Brown (www.mrbrown.com) said the online outcry put unnecessary focus on what the girl did.
'The general response from the blogging community is, 'What's the big deal? What's all this fuss over a pair of Singapore breasts?' '
Some, like student Lee Xueling, 21, thought otherwise.
She said: 'I don't think the media was wrong to report this. She blogged about it and there was no attempt to keep her blog private.
'It's obvious her blog has a wide readership so this was effectively a public post. She merely got even more attention that she usually does.'
However, forums like www.flowerpod.com.sg have seen discussions frowning upon the girl's actions.
Since the story appeared, 90 comments have appeared on www.tomorrow.sg which was among the first blogs to highlight her nude picture.
Foreign blogs have carried comments too.
Foreign news sites like the Taipei Times (www.taipeitimes.com) and the Sydney Morning Herald (www.smh.com.au) have picked up the news item.
Malaysian bloggers also reacted after Malaysian newspaper The Star (www.the- star.com.my) reported on Sarong Party Girl.
Mr Kenny Sia (www.kennysia.com), 23, did a photo parodying Sarong Party Girl's shots in a show of support.
He said: 'By making fun of the situation, I just want to tell people not to take the whole issue so seriously.'
Though she is posing nude, most lawyers said she is probably not breaking any obscenity law.
The girl, who doesn't want to be named but calls herself an 'exhibitionist', tells The Straits Times that she is gunning for a book deal.

I think her lack of respect for society's rules DOES reflect badly on how her parents raised her. Dun say "leave the parents out of this"...becuz the parents ARE an integral part of how this attention-whore was raised.
And I believe her blatant bashing of Asian men just shows how RACIST she is. Yes, racism isn't just about looking down on another race, but also about looking down on your OWN race.
What's worse than an SPG slut is a RACIST SPG slut.
And yes, the parents SHOULD be ashamed of raising such a daughter.
My opinion has nothing to do with being narrow-minded (which no doubt some of the you will accuse me of) but having an appreciation of society's norms. The rules & regulations are there for a reason. Just because some people lack the integrity & strength of character to follow them doesn't mean they can try to justify their failure to uphold their virues by the use of flowery, bombastic language command.
The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.
Posted by: Hui hui at 15 June 2005 1:42 PM | Link to comment
I personally don't agree with the comment that parents should be blamed for a child's behaviour and demeanor.
Yes, the way they raise the child will affect the final product, but it's not a done deal that a pair of steady and respectable parents will produce a child of similar traits.
Too many random bloody factors can be thrown into the equation.Yes, by all means abide by and respect your parents moral values, but it's human nature to strike towards your own path in life.
Besides, who the heck in this day and age wants to be cut and moulded into EXACTLY what their parents are? Where's the sense of individuality in that?
And if that was the case, why don't parents just clone themselves and save themselves the hassle of pregnancy or even marriage?
And as for that SPG blog, no one should give a flying fuck, whats the big deal? Nudity on the net is ancient history.
Just cos she's Asian and Singaporean? Aiseh, go make more hullabaloo over Annabel Chong/ Grace Quek la please.
And the journalist who picked up on this blog thing really should stop resorting to bloody armchair journalism and go cover some decent features.
Posted by: NekoSavant at 15 June 2005 2:18 PM | Link to comment
Hui hui, if her parents are to blame for bringing her up like that, should we blame your parents for teacing you to use language like 'slut' on others?
Who are you, or we, for that matter to judge another person's action? Do you know her parents personally? Let's not be so quick to throw our spit around.
Societal laws are just there to act as guidelines for the unthinking crowd to follow in case they botch things up and reveal their true nature in public. I know I mentioned earlier that societal laws are necessary sometimes, and that is the extent of its necessity; sometimes.
Being a slave to society's norms isn't that bad actually. If you follow it well enough, you'll live a more or less fulfilling life, but please don't try to impose your rules on others.
This isn't about your narrowmindedness, but look at things from the bigger picture. There's no such thing as good or bad, only consequences. How these consequences look to each of us individually depends on our perspective.
The SPG bore her breasts, is that a good or bad thing?
Neither. She simply bore her breasts.

lets just say, that Singaporeans are simply talking back to their nanny state about what's good and what isn't. Isn't it contradictory when people can criticise nudity and yet get up to no good behind blinds/curtains? Perhaps, our Singaporeans need to be less concerned about what's right, and simply 'be', instead of being morally critical of so-called 'obscenities'. These pseudo-moralistic critics must also have really sad sex lives to be mocking and be pointedly disapproving of artistic display.
Posted by: rongrong at 18 June 2005 4:58 PM | Link to comment
From my pov as a photographer, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the photo. I thought its pretty well taken, exposure and all.
Of cos, our Mr NTU Staffer prolly are one of those 'moral policeman' who will go, "Eeee..." at a nude photo regardless of its artistic value. If such a simple picture would cause all those 'moral policemen' out there to go "Eeee..." they will suffer a stroke when they see even more sexually explicit photos out there.
Naturally, its all these hypocritics out there who think Art = Non-nude, Porn = Nude that's pulling back our country. These peeps shldn't see great works of artistes like Michangelo or Raphael, they'll definitely concuss on seeing the nude human body.
Sad to see hypocrites reigning the day. Looks like the progress towards an 'Arts Hub' in Singapore is gonna be delayed for another 500yrs... :(

brandon, well said.
It's just really easy to put people down for doing something different, out of the ordinary.
You see it everyday in the way people make snide remarks when they see someone walk around dressed differently from them.
FHM and Maxim are much more obscene than this, much more pornographic simply based on their intentions (which is sexual stimulation) compared to her intentions which are more for the creation of something artistic.

errrrah why so excited about 2 cha siew bao??(sorry SPG but they look small anyway)She just show the picture on the internet. it not as if she walk around orchard road braless or what. if the lady want to show, it her business. don't want the under age to see, can ban it what. That what SBA is for. Any way, it kind of late now since the strait time start writing about her, basically all hot-blooded underage youth in singapore will at least have her website link in their Favorites Folder by now. Haha.
My point is, it her freedom to do what she want on the internet. U like her, go to her website to see her, U don't, then don't go lah. talk until like her breast can poison the mind of the all youth in singapore. as if they so inoccent like. then who the one who throw the baby into the dust bin one, what about the one who got her pregent. why strait time never say anytime one?? go get an interview with the guy leh. want to know how he so solid one.

In the midst of a culture which endorses public shows of greatness and closes a blind eye to private extremes of sick behaviour, unfair judgement is a natural thing to be expected.
You see both men and women waxing lyrical about how 'dirty' and 'low' it is for a young lady to give herself in physical abundance to a young lad she loves - or to show her beauty in its fullness. Yet these same indviduals do not seem to see the atrocities disguised as other forms of affection shown by certain individuals in our very own society - yes SINGAPORE - to CHILDREN.
If you want to see the end of such judgement, friends, I'm afraid that will take a long time - until the end of world hypocrisy.

By the way ... Wow Hui Hui! ... you'd fit so perfectly with the Inquisition ... Too bad they have had no vacancies for centuries ...
Ladies and Gents ... Hui Hui's critique is a perfect example of why we cannot avoid judgement in this hypocritical society ... they will be what they will be ...
Posted by: Subra at 20 June 2005 10:55 PM | Link to comment
The more I read Hui Hui's comments, the more I feel like commenting on them.
These replies have nothing to do with good command of the language yada yada ... like she claims. In fact I think simple English is adequate to answer her.
In short: "Judge not, lest ye be judged." No, I don't think Hui Hui is narrow-minded - simply judgemental. That shows amply enough in her closure: "The nail that sticks out will be hammered down." - very proletariat eh?
Yes, Racism in any form is no virtue. Agreed. But look me in the face and tell me you have not been racist ma'am - your race or otherwise.
It is said we often cry out most against those vices we fear in ourselves. Perhaps that is what is happening here. A Singaporean's quote: "There is latent racism everywhere. We cannot destroy it. All we can do is tolerate one another."

Well, some more for T-boy and dec.
T-boy, how many youngsters under 17 etc actually got on to that particular blog and looked at this girl? And well, yes I agree there should be no double standards. An old man has as much to pose what expose he wishes, but obviously, if one can start criticising parents, by that same token, one must criticise parents who can't control what their children are looking at on the Net, right? It's either both or nothing. Be fair or don't judge at all.
Likewise dec, the choice of seeing this SPG lies with the surfer. Think about it - the words SPG already hint at some form of adult content. Using the wide variety of net control software available now - NetNanny, CyberPatrol etc, parents can do something about that.

Hui Hui is like some of the self righteous Asian girls I see. Very judgemental but away from the crowd are capable of worse things.
Posted by: fed up at 21 June 2005 7:46 AM | Link to comment
Each to his own ideas, actions and views. No one should judge one's behaviour and we are all entitled to our own thoughts and ways of doing. But bear in mind that we have to be responsible for all that we've done. I feel what SPG did wasn't right at all but that doesn't mean she's condemned. She's just expressing herself that's upsetting some people. I'm glad she finally removed those pics because she loves her folks enough to care about their reactions. Which parent would be proud of his/her child doing such an act?
Anyway, the society has to discern for themselves and not point a finger at anyone, agree?

Ahh... to all those people hammering on Hui Hui, I think all of you were commenting on the wrong person. The one with all the sluts comments is Mel.
In fact, I think Hui Hui is more of the opinion that is not a issue and that the media should spend more time more constructively.
As a Malaysian... I cannot help but wonder how things would play out if this whole "issue" occurred here. Probably new internet laws would be passed by the gov't within 48hours to defend our sacred society.

as an active member of the art scene, I doubt very much that nudity carries the tag of pornography, but rather its the mindset of Singaporeans to be unable to appreciate nudity as an art form, instead, seeing it as something shameful, immoral, etc. ie. all the Confucian conundrumama. Nudity, by the way, is not abhorred in Singapore's art circles, it is simply that the exposure of the general public to such works is limited, due to low interest, low hype.

The problem with nudity is, not everyone who should would pose in the buff and too many who shouldn't, do.

Thank you for your esteemed advice on FlowerPod.com.
I really enjoyed every word of it.
However, there's a risk of double eyelid glue and tape.
By poking and pulling the delicate skin in the eyelid, it stretches and stays loose, that is to say, it sags like an old woman's.
It behooves you not to sue a splint or other hard objects on the eyelid. Once the skin is over-stretched, it never recoils or returns to its original state.
I've found another way to form a crease without glue, tape, splint, fork, sutures or surgery; and written a book on the topic. If you write to a publisher, he'll publish my book for every Oriental to learn my technique. He'll do it if he gets enough letters requesting the book.
I've no competition in a 1 billion market. In other words, my technique is the only one of its kind in the world and as such it will benefit any publisher.
